According to star Anthony Mackie, production on Captain America: New World Order will begin in March 2023.Mackie, who portrays Sam Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealed in an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment that filming for Captain America: New World Order would begin shortly. "We're just kicking it off," he said in the interview, "and everybody's getting squared away, and ready to go."
The fourth Captain America film is set to be a continuation of the Disney+ miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which starred Mackie, and is going to explore how becoming Captain America has affected Sam Wilson. As Nate Moore, the Vice President of Production and Development at Marvel Studios, noted in a recent interview, Mackie's Captain America is "not Steve Rogers, and I think that's a good thing...this new Cap is Rocky. He's going to be the underdog in any situation. He's not a super soldier." He later added, "What makes somebody Captain America? I'm going to argue it's not being a super soldier. And I think we're going to prove that with Mackie and Sam Wilson."
Captain America Builds Out the MCU Even More
Actor Harrison Ford is also set to make his first appearance in the MCU, having been cast as Thunderbolt Ross following the death of William Hurt in March 2022. Mackie joked that, in having to explain the MCU to Ford, he is preparing to give the actor "a full breakdown, and we're gonna prepare notes. I'm very excited about it." Ford, for his part, has expressed optimism at taking a departure from previous roles and trying something new. "I like doing something different to what I've ever done and pleasing people with it. So I'll try a piece of that," he said.
The fourth Captain America film is set to have a largely new crew of filmmakers. While the two most recent Captain America films (The Winter Soldier and Civil War) were directed by the Russo brothers and written by screenwriting duo Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the upcoming movie is set to be directed by Julius Onah and written by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson. The latter two worked on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier together.
All MCU projects, including the first three Captain America movies and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, are available to stream on Disney+. New World Order is currently scheduled to be released on May 3, 2024.
