Captain America 2 Director List Narrows as F. Gary Gray Drops Out

Less than two weeks after word surfaced that Marvel was had narrowed its list of contenders to helm the Captain America sequel to just three, Deadline reports the studio's job may have gotten a little easier: F. Gary Gray, best known for The Negotiator and The Italian Job, has apparently withdrawn from consideration and entered negotiations to direct the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton.

That would leave George Nolfi, the screenwriter turned director of The Adjustment Bureau, and brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, who between them have directed more than 30 episodes of NBC’s Community. However, Deadline contends Marvel may be speaking with other candidates as well.

The sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger will pick up where The Avengers leaves off, continuing Steve Rogers' partnership with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. as the star-spangled Avenger struggles to acclimate to his role as a hero in the modern era. Chris Evans and Samuel L. Jackson will reprise their roles in the film, which opens April 4, 2014.
