Netflix has ordered an anime series based on Cannon Busters, based on the short-lived 2005 comic by LeSean Thomas.

Created, directed and executive produced by Thomas, the fantasy adventure follows the exploits of S.A.M, a high-end, royal-class friendship droid who’s joined by a quirky, discarded maintenance robot and a brash, deadly fugitive. Together, the unlikely trio embarks on an unforgettable journey in a fantastic and dangerous world in search of S.A.M’s best friend, the heir to a powerful kingdom under siege.

Just two issues of the comic were published, and Thomas had planned to continue the story as a graphic novel. However, none was ever released. An animator, character designer and storyboard artist whose credits include The Boondocks, Black Dynamite and The Legend of Korra, Thomas launched a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2014 to fund an eight- to 10-minute pilot for Cannon Busters. His most recent project is Children of Ether, streaming on Crunchyroll.

Netflix has ordered 12 episodes of Cannon Busters, which hails from Manga Entertainment Ltd, Nada Holdings and Satelight (Macross Delta). Thomas is joined on the writing staff by the likes of Natasha Allegri (Bee & Puppycat), Anne Toole (The Witcher) and Nilah Magruder (M.F.K.). Matt Wayne (Justice League Unlimited, Niko & The Sword of Light) will serve as story editor.
