The makers of Dead Space are developing a new science fiction survival horror video game for the next-generation in 2022's The Callisto Protocol.

A cinematic red-band trailer for the game shows an inmate awakening in a remote prison known as Black Iron. Set in the year 2320 on Jupiter's moon Callisto, Black Iron is invaded by voracious aliens that resemble the otherworldly horrors imagined by H.P. Lovecraft, complete with lethal tentacles.

True to its red-band warning, the trailer doesn't hold back in its graphic content as the prisoner is completely eviscerated after being stalked in the dark by one of the aliens while the prison warden watches via CCTV. As the feed goes dark, the warden observes a transport ship arriving on the moon, with fresh meat.

The project is helmed by Dead Space co-creator Glen Schofield, with the story reportedly set several years in the future of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. Schofield is developing the game to take full advantage of the advanced hardware available on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S to deliver the ultimate survival horror experience.

Developed by Striking Distance Studios and published by Krafton, The Callisto Protocol is expected to be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2022.
