The following contains spoilers for Episode 13 of Call of the Night, "Call of the Night," now streaming on HIDIVE.

Call of the Night is a romantic comedy anime of the Summer 2022 season where true happiness is never easy to find, especially not in the dead of night under a full moon. Protagonist Yamori Ko was so sure he'd find happiness if he abandoned his daytime human life to run free in the witching hour, and maybe even find love.

Ko's quest to become a vampire seemed foolish for a time, and in light of recent events, it probably is. But his true goal is to find happiness, true love and a purpose in the night -- not just become a vampire for its own sake -- and Episode 13 helps Ko realize that even without fangs, he has accomplished his goal after all.

Call of the Night's Season Finale Brings Ko & Nazuna Full Circle

Ko leaping down

In the world of Call of the Night, vampires and humans are more alike than Ko ever expected. These are not pretentious Underworld or Dungeons & Dragons aristocrats of the night; these bloodsuckers are shockingly human in their thoughts, actions and emotions, and becoming a vampire actually doesn't change much for a human after all.

In fact, it can only make life worse -- a newly sired vampire can never return to their human life, and the endless immortal life gets pretty boring after some time. Because of all this, Nakakusa Nazuna and her coven of friends are bored and lonely, and that's why Nazuna wishes to prevent Ko's transformation into a vampire himself. She just wants him to be happy as a human.

But there may be a compromise. Even if Ko still wishes to embrace the night and become a vampire as Nazuna's lover, they can meet in the middle and find true happiness where they never thought to look. In Episode 13, Ko re-iterates his plan to become a vampire while Nazuna tries to push him away, concerned that he's about to make a big mistake. By the episode's end they meet up once again, trading places from their original meeting. Now it's Ko approaching Nazuna with a "you wanna have some fun?" expression, and for all the right reasons. He and Nazuna have reached a turning point at last.

Call of the Night's Open-Ended Conclusion Fails to Address a Few Storylines

Nazuna Ko kiss

For a time, Nazuna the vampire was convinced she had nothing to give Ko except the empty repetition of immortal vampire life, and she feared getting too close to Ko for that and a few other reasons. Episode 13 finds a way around that problem, though. Ko and Nazuna each realize that the night is only lonely and boring if they are alone; but if they are together as good friends and potential lovers, all that changes. Nazuna even admits that being with Ko and pretending to have a glamorous lifestyle had been fun for her, and it helped her forget the emptiness of her supernatural life. In a way, she is almost like Ryuk from Death Note, but more lovable. Ko really is the missing piece of Nazuna's life, and vice versa.

This is the power of friendship at work, a mutually fulfilling bond that might give way to true love one day. With that in mind, Nazuna and Ko finally embrace in a passionate kiss, cementing their friendship as a stable and loving bond. They aren't just two outcasts hanging out after dark; they have something special. Episode 13 ends on that note, meaning Call of the Night's ending is rather open-ended -- especially in terms of Ko's quest to become a vampire -- and there is no resolution for Akira and Mahiru, either.

Thus, the ending feels a bit rushed and oversimplified, but at least that opens the door for a potential second season, and at least something was accomplished in Season 1. The ending is far from a climactic "I love you," but it's a start, and for casual anime fans, that is enough. Nazuna was never the type to gush like that, anyway.
