Cable makes quite the messianic splash in our first look at Deadpool 2.
Ever since the arrival of the first Deadpool, expectations have been high for the sequel -- expectations that soars even higher after Deadpool himself told audiences that Cable would be added to the cast in the film's after-credits scene. However, even after this bold declaration, Fox played coy with the role Natham Summers, aka Cable, would play in the sequel. A year later, a Deadpool short was featured ahead of Logan, and while it didn't come right out and announce anything, it did promise that a casting announcement would be coming soon.
Not long after this, actor Josh Brolin was cast in the role, to general approval from fans. When the first official picture of the actor in his Cable costume was revealed, it confirmed that the character would be an accurate representation of his comic book counterpart, as promised. At that point, the only thing left was to see him in all his live-action glory.
This morning, we finally got that with the release of Deadpool 2's first teaser trailer. Well, OK, we didn't exactly get our first proper look at Cable... but we did get a few intriguing pieces of new information.
While the actual teaser focused on Deadpool giving his best Bob Ross impersonation, complete with happy clouds and trees, we did get a brief collage of footage from the actual movie, snippets and all-too-brief looks at various characters and scenes of the film. No, we didn't see Cable as clearly as we saw Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Blind Al or Dopinder the Taxi Driver, but we did get a serious clue as to his role in the film.
In a brief shot of Julian Dennison's still unnamed, we see the Hunt for the Wilderpeople actor standing in a room surrounded by flames, his arms outstretched. Taking note of his surroundings, we can see that the character seems to be standing in a church-like space. The flaming chairs are lined up for some sort of religious service, but the true revelation is in the background, on the banners hung on the walls. The messages warn readers that "The End is Near" and to "Prepare Yourself." Another declares that those in the room are "Pure Blood," with the final banner reading "Purity, Humanity, Infinity."
If you look closely under the banner that reads "The End is Near," you see the silhouette of a character, one who appears to have a metallic left arm and an "X" insignia on his chest. All of this seems to point at the fact the Cable will find himself the subject of a cult-like church in Deadpool 2, with the character portrayed as some sort of messianic or possibly even doomsday figure. Whether he's the cult's leader, or an unwilling figurehead remains to be seen, of course, but this brief glimpse does point an intriguing twist on the time-traveling mutant's role.
This is a pretty interesting twist on Cable. Will he be the one speaheading this cult, or is he merely the inspiration for it? One way or another, we already know how it will all end: With fire, and guns. Very big guns.
Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 sees the return of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus and Karan Soni as Dopinder, with newcomers Zazie Beetz as Domino, Josh Brolin as Cable, Julian Dennison in an unknown role and Jack Kesy as a villain widely thought to be Black Tom Cassidy. The film opens June 1, 2018.
