For the first time since Star Wars: A New Hope, C-3PO will be an integral part of a Star Wars plot. Anthony Daniels -- who plays the golden protocol droid -- explained how his character is more than “window dressing” in the forthcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
“In previous recent movies Threepio has just been kind of window dressing, something on the mantlepiece, you polish it and dust it off when guests are coming,” Daniels explained to Entertainment Weekly. “J.J. and Chris came up with this aspect of Threepio we had not seen before that’s remarkably clever. They go down deep into ancient Star Wars and came up with something refreshingly new.”
C-3PO will also share a notable amount of screentime with Daisy Ridley’s Rey, with her character reportedly spending more time with the droid than any other character in the final installment of the modern Star Wars trilogy.
Directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Keri Russell, Matt Smith, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher, with Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant. The film arrives on Dec. 20.
