Zack Snyder's early depiction of Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that saw her carrying the severed heads of her enemies was confirmed to be part of a proposed alternate reality.
"Wonder Woman 1854 - This amazing image shot by Stephen Berkman of an else-world, war weary Diana, who had chased [Ares] across the battlefields of the world and had yet to meet Steve, who would help her restore her faith in mankind and love itself," Snyder tweeted.
The image was eventually replaced by the photo of Diana Prince, Steven Trevor and company during World War I. This version would have been taken during the Crimean War, which saw the likes of the Ottoman Empire, France and the British Empire defeat the Russian Empire and Kurdish rebels in the 1850s. Notably, this was the first major war to feature photographic documentation.
Patty Jenkins, who directed both Wonder Woman and its sequel, recently confirmed there was some back-and-forth with Warner Bros. on having Diana depicted in such a savage manner. "There was such mistrust of a different way of doing things and a different point of view," she explained. "So that was definitely happening, even when I first joined Wonder Woman it was like, 'Uhh, yeah, ok, but letâs do it this other way.' But I was like, 'Women donât want to see that. Her being harsh and tough and cutting peopleâs heads off, thatâs not whatâ Iâm a Wonder Woman fan, thatâs not what weâre looking for.' Still, I could feel that shaky nervousness [on their part] of my point of view."
Fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham Cityâs own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolisâs most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than itâs ever known before.
Directed by Zack Snyder and written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter and Gal Gadot.
