Burger King took a swipe at its fast-food rival McDonald's with a commercial that comes on like a horror film, where the long-absent mascot Ronald McDonald is conjured up like a demon.

According to Campaign, the horror-themed promotion is running at Burger King restaurants in Denmark and Sweden, just in time for Halloween. Customers enter the bathroom and chant "canceled clown" three times. The lights immediately go out and a ghostly clown with bright red hair, a faded yellow short-sleeved shirt with red suspenders and glowing red eyes appears in the mirror.

Daniel Schröder, marketing director of Burger King Sweden, said, "The clown doesn't seem to be happy with the way things ended. But we hope he finds his peace and can move on to bigger and better things."

Happy-go-lucky mascot Ronald McDonald — a clown who sports red hair, a yellow jumpsuit and big floppy red shoes —was introduced in 1963, but has been phased out of McDonald's ads in recent years. Burger King's own mascot is aptly named the Burger King, and has been active since 1955.
