A young woman discovers an abandoned yellow Volkswagen Beetle in a junkyard, and ends up with more than she bargained for, in the teaser trailer the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee.
Clocking in at nearly two and a half minutes, it's not a "teaser" in the strictest sense, but it certainly achieves what teasers typically aim to accomplish: It establishes a tone that sets it apart from the previous film in the blockbuster franchise, Transformers: The Last Knight, placing the emphasis on the relationship between Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld) and the fan-favorite Autobot, and offering a taste of the humor. But while the focus is on emotion, the last half of the teaser delivers the action. And possibly a Decepticon.
On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
Directed by Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) from a script by Christina Hodson, Bumblebee stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Pamela Adlon, Jason Drucker, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, Ricardo Hoyos and Gracie Dzienny. The film arrives Dec. 21.
