Thanks to BOOM! Studios, Buffy is back. Earlier this year, the comic publisher announced plans for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a new comic book reboot based on the iconic TV show that's set to offer a modern day update on Buffy's first adventures.
While Buffy creator Joss Whedon will serve as a consultant on the series, Jordie Bellaire will write the comic, and Dan Mora will handle art duties on the upcoming reboot, which BOOM! says will reflect the world "outside your window."
Now, BOOM! has given us our first look at Mora's character designs for the core Buffy cast, which include updated takes on fan-favorite Sunnyvale residents like Buffy Summers, Xander Harris, Willow Rosenberg and Rupert Giles, Buffy's Watcher.
While the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer became a staple of the late 1990s and early 2000s, these new designs have a distinctly-2010s flare.
These designs also give us out first looks at Spike, Anya and a radically-redesigned Drusilla—fan-favorite characters who all showed up in later seasons of the series. While each of these characters played large roles later in the series, this reboot will rework them into the beginning of Buffy's story, instead of introducing them as major players later on in Buffy's life.
“As you can see, Jordie and Dan have some huge plans for Buffy and the Gang – starting with some pretty major introductions of characters like Anya and…well, I won’t spoil that one quite yet," said BOOM! Studios Executive Editor Jeanine Schaefer. "But let’s just say by issue #4, it’ll be clear that this is a love letter to the Buffy we all adore and will go in directions that no one ever expected.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1, by Jordie Bellaire, Dan Mora and Joss Whedon, is set to be released on Wednesday, Jan. 9 from BOOM! Studios.
