Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon denied claims of abuse directed towards him by series star Charisma Carpenter.

"I was not mannerly," Whedon told NY Magazine in response to the allegations Carpenter made in 2021. "Most of my experiences with Charisma were delightful and charming. She struggled sometimes with her lines, but nobody could hit a punch line harder than her." When asked if he called her fat while she was pregnant as Carpenter claimed, Whedon said, "I did not call her fat. Of course I didn't"

In February 2021, in the midst of the controversy surrounding Whedon and Justice League star Ray Fisher, Carpenter backed the Victor Stone/Cyborg actor while detailing her own experience with Whedon on the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. According to Carpenter, it was Fisher's public stance against Whedon that helped guide her decision to come forward, explaining how Whedon "has a history of being casually cruel." Examples she cited included how Whedon "proceeded to attack my character, mock my religious beliefs, accuse me of sabotaging the show, and then unceremoniously fired me the following season once I gave birth." Carpenter's statement was swiftly corroborated by fellow Buffy alum Amber Benson.

"For nearly two decades, I have held my tongue and even made excuses for certain events that traumatize me to this day," Carpenter explained. "Joss Whedon abused his power on numerous occasions while working together on the sets of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. While he found his misconduct amusing, it only served to intensify my performance anxiety, disempower me, and alienate me from my peers. The disturbing incidents triggered a chronic physical condition from which I still suffer. It is with a beating, heavy heart that I say I coped in isolation and, at times, destructively."

"Last summer, when Ray Fisher publicly accused Joss of abusive and unprofessional behavior toward the cast and crew during reshoots on the Justice League set in 2017, it gutted me," she added. "Joss has a history of being casually cruel. He has created hostile and toxic work environments since his early career. I know because I experienced it first-hand. Repeatedly."

In addition to denying Carpenter's claims, Whedon denied the aforementioned claims made by Fisher that he engaged inappropriate on-set behavior during the Justice League reshoots.
