Keanu Reeves is one of Hollywood's most beloved stars and for good reason. He's become a favorite of the Internet as much for his kindness as his movies, which are also beloved nearly universally. So, when it was announced that he would be writing a comic, fans stood up and took notice. That book is BRZRKR and it's already a sensation.

Published by Boom Studios!, its first issue is one of the best-selling comics in years. With its first five issues in the books, it's a perfect time for fans who haven't picked it up yet to give it a try, as there is a lot to love about it.

If one thing has been made apparent by the first five issues of this book, it's that Reeves is a better writer than anyone suspected. He's worked with some of the best writers and directors in Hollywood and has definitely been paying attention. While many actors go on to write movies, Reeves has been able to take what he knows about writing and go to a very different medium than the one he learned in.

While there is some crossover between comics and celebrities, Reeves has made the whole thing seem seamless, proving that he is a much greater talent than most people realized.

9 Matt Kindt's Long History With Comics Gives The Book A Distinctive Voice

Matt Kindt is a veteran of indie comics, having worked for some of the biggest indie publishers of all time. The creator of the indie classic Mind MGMT, Kindt has made a name for himself outside the Big Two, writing thoughtful and imaginative comics for publishers like Top Shelf, Dark Horse, and Valiant.

Kindt was a great choice for this book, as he brings a different sensibility than a writer from the Big Two would. His practical experience with scripting makes him perfect to work with a rookie like Reeves and the two are creating a compelling slow burn story, one that is equally good for balls to the wall action as it is for naked emotion.

8 Ron Garney Has Proven To Be The Perfect Artist For The Project

BRZRKR 2

Ron Garney is an undisputed veteran in the comic industry. Since his big break on Captain America with writer Mark Waid, Garney has been a top artist at Marvel and DC, drawing some of both company's biggest characters. Marvel legends like Wolverine, Captain America, and Spider-Man, as well as DC mainstays like the Justice League, have all benefited from his adroit penciling.

Garney's pencils have proven to be just what the doctor ordered for BRZRKR. He's equally good at the kind of bloody action the book seemingly glories in and capturing the millennia-long emotional journey of main character Unute.

7 It Does An Amazing Job Of Portraying The Toll Of A Life Of Destruction Has On One Person

Unute has existed for thousands of years and his power gives him godlike strength and longevity. He enters into berzerk states that make him into the near-perfect soldier; just point him at the enemy and he destroys everything in his way, regardless of the damage done to him. While the book does a great job of capturing the visceral nature of the violence, it also captures the sorrow of the man behind the violence.

Immortals in comics are usually dangerous beings like Vandal Savage and Ra's al Ghul. While Unute is undoubtedly dangerous, the toll of all the death he's caused has worn him down and all he wants is a release from it.

6 It's The Kind Of Story That Could Only Come From An Indie Publisher

Brzrkr

Keanu Reeves is a huge star and someone of his stature seems like the kind of person who would gravitate towards a bigger publisher like Marvel or DC. He's worked for DC parent company Warner Brothers and Marvel's owner Disney and would be a coup for either publisher to get. The fact he went to Boom with his first comic says something about the story.

BRZRKR is violent and complex, an expertly crafted story that wouldn't really fit at either of the Big Two. Indie publishers have put out some amazing comics in recent years, ones that are very different from the norm of the Big Two. BRZRKR could only work at an indie.

5 There Are So Many Layers To The Story

3-BRZRKR

One of the best parts about BRZRKR is how complex it is. While it can often feel like a simple story, Reeves and Kindt go out of their way to add layers to things that make it so much more than it seems on the surface. The first issue is a blood-soaked look into who Unute is in the present with every issue after that is yet another layer of the story's onion.

The way the comics engages both with its own oftentimes horrific violence and the sorrow at the core of the man doing it is remarkable, with each issue finding a way to balance violent spectacle with the emotional wringer that said violence can cause. There's so much to every chapter of this story.

4 It's A Violent Spectacle Like Few Others

BRZRKR 1

Violence is a massive part of BRZRKR. Unute's millennia of fighting for violent causes is the cornerstone of his character, just as the violence of others is responsible for his creation. This is perfectly illustrated in each and every issue, both in the way that Garney literally illustrates the book to the thoughtful writing of Reeves and Kindt.

The book's violence is brutal and visceral. Fans may be rooting for Unute as the main character but the graphic quality of the book's action scenes can disquiet even the stoutest reader. It's so masterfully written and drawn, unlike so much else out there.

3 The Mysticism Of The Early Issues Is Giving Away To Something Different

BRZRKR Machine

Unute's origin would be familiar to any comic fan who has followed Marvel and the way its powerful gods interact with the universe. Unute's tribe is constantly under attack and weaker than those who surround them. His mother prays to the gods for a protector and Unute is born, the weapon his people were looking for.

In the present, Unute is working for the US government, hoping their advanced technology can find a way to destroy him after his years of pain and death. That government, in turn, wants to create more soldiers like him. The way the story is turning out is one of its best parts.

2 Unute Feels Like A Keanu Reeves Character On The Page

BRZRKR Ages

In past years, Reeve's acting style has been criticized but the Matrix movies and the John Wick ones have shown that his style of acting can work very well for a certain type of character. BRZRKR proves how well this type of low-key character can be portrayed on the page. Unute is a reserved man on the page and it translates wonderfully.

Reeves and Kindt are using some of the best Keanu Reeves characters as inspiration for Unute and the whole thing gives the comic a wonderful feel. This type of character works perfectly for the story.

1 It's Going To Make An Excellent Movie

Keanu Reeves Brzrkr

Superheroes movies are big business and while BRZRKR isn't exactly a superhero tale, it still has all of the trappings. Boom Studios! has been putting out a lot of comics lately that are tailor-made for the big screen and BRZRKR, with its illustrious co-writer and character design based on him, is going to be a movie sooner rather than later.

While the story isn't halfway over yet, it's shaping up to be something amazing, and seeing just how it all looks on the screen is going to be intense. Breaking the story in comics was the perfect place, giving the eventual filmmakers an excellent blueprint.
