John McClane is running out of time.
After Live Free or Die Hard, the character almost made a return alongside Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, though that idea was eventually shot down. Now, Bruce Willis still wants to make Die Hard 5, but the actor says he only has two more films in him before yippee kai-yaying for the last time.
“I want to do Die Hard 5, then one final Die Hard movie — Die Hard 6 — before finally hanging that white vest up for good,” the Red star told Showbiz Spy about his hopes for the future of his flagship franchise. “At the moment, I can run and I can fight on screen. But there will come a time when I no longer want to do that. That’s when I’ll step away from the Die Hard films.”
Willis has another concern, too, that Hollywood might find another actor to step into the saddle and keep the Die Hard brand alive. He said: “In the next few years they could easily find a replacement for me or call the character someone else.”
Easily? I’m not sure about easily. Reboots and remakes are as common as the cold these days, but only the occasional few are actually worthwhile and well thought out; more often than not, these films are obvious cash grabs and desperate attempts at keeping something alive. But Die Hard, so far at least, is Bruce Willis. Making a Die Hard movie without Willis as McClane is like crafting a Rocky movie without Stallone, or a Terminator movie without Schwarzenegger, which is exactly why Terminator Salvation fell apart. (Well, one of the reasons, anyway.)
Willis can easily be replaced in the sense that finding someone to star in such a global franchise as Die Hard won’t be hard, but finding someone who can bring the same level of energy and excitement as John McClane? Not an enviable task, if you ask me.
