The Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell revealed details about the next iteration of the long-running horror franchise -- Evil Dead Rise -- including its protagonist.

"Well rebooting can be very confusing and frustrating and not always successful," Campbell told Alabama Life & Culture. "Reboot, sequel, remake we have all these crazy terms. What we’re doing now is we’re saying 'Look, this is another Evil Dead movie and that book gets around, a lot of people run into it and it’s another story.' The main key with Evil Dead is they’re just regular people who are battling what seems to be a very unstoppable evil, and so that’s where the horror comes from. It’s not someone who’s skilled. They’re not fighting a soldier. They’re not fighting a scientist. They’re not fighting anybody more than your average neighbor. This one is going to be a similar thing. We’re going to have a heroine, a woman in charge, and she’s going to try and save her family."

Campbell's comments largely mirror those he made in June when he said, "You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This ones gonna be a little more dynamic. We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That's what we're going to continue."

The Evil Dead franchise began in 1981 with Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead. Grossing $2.4 million domestic on a $400,000 budget, The Evil Dead was successful enough to spawn two more sequels, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. The series then continued to endure with a 2013 remake, Evil Dead. Meanwhile, a sequel TV show focusing on the further adventures of Campbell's Ash Williams, entitled Ash vs. Evil Dead, aired from October 2015-February 2018.

Directed by Lee Cronin, Evil Dead Rise has yet to receive a release date.
