Evil Dead Rise was initially set to release on HBO Max, but Bruce Campbell claimed the film's preview had such high ratings that the "suits" are discussing a theatrical release instead.

At the San Diego Comic-Con, Campbell sat down with CBR to discuss the Evil Dead franchise. When asked about upcoming projects, the producer mentioned Evil Dead Rise might get a theatrical release, as first reported by One Take News. "We just had a preview that went... That was very high ratings. They were potentially going to stream it on HBO Max, but it might go theatrical. Maybe in the fall," Campbell said.

Campbell claimed this film would have major differences from the rest of the franchise. "It's an urban version of Evil Dead now," the producer said. "Ain't no cabin anymore. We're going single mom in the city. The apartment is the cabin." He claimed the writer and director Lee Cronin did a great job with the film. "It's going to creep your shit out," the producer said.

Evil Dead Rise is the fifth film in the franchise, and development for the movie officially began in October 2021. Executive producer Sam Raimi had planned to make another Evil Dead movie with Campbell, but the actor had retired his role as Ash. The two were executive producers on the film while handing creative control over to Cronin and producer Robert G. Tapert. Filming for the movie finished in October 2021 and was set to release on HBO Max.

Raimi, Tapert and Campbell collaborated on the original 1981 Evil Dead film. Critical reception for the movie was relatively positive, and it is considered one of the most influential cult films in the horror genre. Raimi and Campbell continued to work on various projects, including the Spider-Man trilogy in the early 2000s. The fourth Evil Dead film was released in 2012 and served as a soft reboot for the series, providing a path for the TV series Ash vs Evil Dead, which also starred Campbell.

Campbell's most recent work has included acting as the voice of Ash Williams in Evil Dead: The Game which was released on May 13, 2022. He also played a small role in the recent Raimi-directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which hit theaters in May 2022. Last year, the actor produced and starred in the horror comedy film Black Friday.
