Bruce Campbell may not be done with the Evil Dead franchise after all, as an Ash vs. Evil Dead animated series is currently in development.

As reported by Collider, an animated continuation of Starz's Ash vs. Evil Dead series is being discussed and they may have a place for Campbell to keep playing Ash Williams. "You can do the future a lot easier in animation," he explained. "I still sound like Ash, and you know, my voice hasn't been as beat up as my body has been so I can still do that crap. So I'll still do the video game. And we're already talking about an animated [series]."

Campbell first played Ash Williams, a hapless college student beset by hordes of the undead, in 1981's The Evil Dead. The low-budget horror feature became a cult favorite, launching the careers of both Campbell and writer/director Sam Raimi. Evil Dead was followed by two sequels -- Evil Dead II in 1987 and Army of Darkness in 1992 -- and a remake/reboot in 2013. Campbell would return to voice Ash in a number of Evil Dead video games before starring in the ongoing series Ash vs. Evil Dead, which ran for three seasons on Starz before being canceled in 2018.

The Evil Dead Lives On

After the conclusion of Ash vs. Evil Dead, Campbell announced his retirement from playing the character, citing the physical limitations of portraying a monster slayer. "Whatever the cliched phrase is, I left it all on the table. I've got nothing else to give," he explained. "The three seasons were the longest seasons of my life. If you saw the emails pleading with various directors that were like, 'Hey, my knee's not working right. Be careful about tomorrow. Let's have the stunt guy nearby. Hey, I can't run anymore.' It just was an endless physical struggle."

Outside the potential animated series, the Evil Dead franchise is set to continue with Evil Dead Rise, a sequel to the 2013 reboot with both Campbell and Raimi on board as executive producers. Directed by Lee Cronin, Campbell described the film as "an urban version of Evil Dead now. Ain't no cabin anymore. We're going single mom in the city. The apartment is the cabin." Although initially set to stream exclusively on HBO Max, Campbell said positive reactions to test screenings may be strong enough for Evil Dead Rise to get a theatrical release.

Ash vs. Evil Dead is available to stream on Starz.
