Fede Alvarez’s remake of Evil Dead hits theaters in April, but fans of the original franchise continue to call for Bruce Campbell’s return as Ash Williams in the original franchise that concluded with Army of Darkness in 1992. Original Evil Dead director Sam Raimi has teased his desire to make “Evil Dead 4,” but it’s possible the movie he wants to make is actually “Army of Darkness 2,” a direct sequel to the end of the original Evil Dead trilogy.
In an interview with ComingSoon.net, Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures producing partner Rob Tapert at SXSW this weekend, Evil Dead 4 was never in the cards, it was only ever meant to be an Army of Darkness sequel.
“That would be ‘Army of Darkness 2,'” Tapert said. “Everybody calls it ‘Evil Dead 4’ but Army of Darkness wasn’t called ‘Evil Dead’ anywhere except by the fans.”
Even Evil Dead and Army of Darkness star Bruce Campbell commented on whether he might return for a potential fourth film in the original franchise.
“Sam threatens this every six months,” Campbell told ComingSoon.net at SXSW. “I’ve heard this a thousand times, because in the back of his mind, he never wants to let go, because he loved making these movies. We all loved making them together. They were a nightmare to make, very difficult, but they lasted the test of time, so he’s not going to let that go, and I’m never going to say ‘no.’ It’ll be me and a walker fighting some other old guy. But that’s what he does and who knows? It may happen.”
Meanwhile, Alvarez’s Evil Dead remake, which screened at SXSW, is set to hit theaters April 5.
