The X-Men have faced many threats over the years since the team's debut in 1963, from humans that hate and fear what they don't understand to hate-filled villains who join together to take down Marvel's merry mutants.

One of the most recurring groups that initially served as the extreme opposites of the X-Men was the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, which have seen quite a few rosters led by different mutants over the years. We'll be taking a look at a few of the best and worst versions of the Brotherhood the X-Men have had to deal with over the last 60 years.

10 BEST: BROTHERHOOD OF EVIL MUTANTS

The very first team was assembled by Magneto in the pages of X-Men #4 and was known as the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, a name that would be used by many other groups after the originals, though the "Evil" part of the group was dropped depending on the members.

Magneto's original team consisted of himself, Mortimer Toynbee/Toad, Jason Wyngarde/Mastermind, and two members who would go on to join the Avengers later in their careers, twin siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Pietro and Wanda would eventually find out their familial connection to Magneto, though they weren't aware while they worked alongside the Brotherhood.

9 WORST: TOAD'S BROTHERHOOD

After Toad was kicked out of the Brotherhood when it was reformed as a government agency, he would create his own failed attempt at the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants that would include members like John Allerdyce/Pyro, Fred Dukes/Blob, Eileen Harsaw/Phantazia, and Karl Lykos/Sauron, who wasn't even a mutant.

Toad's Brotherhood was less about mutant rights and superiority and more about taking revenge on the X-teams like X-Force and X-Factor, though they also went up against heroes like Spider-Man and Darkhawk before they thankfully disbanded.

8 BEST: FREEDOM FORCE

BROTHERHOOD OF MUTANTS - Freedom Force

Raven Darkholme is the shape-shifting mutant known as Mystique who formed her own Brotherhood that included Pyro, Blob, Dominikos Petrakis/Avalanche, Irene Adler/Destiny, Spyral, and Rogue, whose time with the Brotherhood would result in her absorption of Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel's abilities that would lead her to join the X-Men.

Mystique would reform her Brotherhood of Evil Mutants into a government strike team known as Freedom Force, which served as heroes alongside other government agents like Super Sabre, Crimson Commando, Stonewall and the second Spider-Woman. A series of deaths including Mystique's long-time partner Destiny led to the disbandment of Freedom Force.

7 WORST: HAVOK'S BROTHERHOOD

Alex Summers/Havok was a former X-Man and leader of the government-sanctioned X-Factor at the time that he was kidnapped by the alternate-reality mad scientist known as the Dark Beast, who hailed from the Age of Apocalypse reality. Dark Beast amped up Havok's powers and messed with his brain to force him to work for the powerful being known as Onslaught.

After Onslaught was defeated, Havok continued to work with Dark Beast to create a new Brotherhood of Mutants, which was the first time the "Evil" part of the name was dropped. Havok's squad included mutants like Fatale, Random, and Ever and committed a few terrorist acts, though it was eventually revealed Havok was undercover and his Brotherhood thankfully disappeared.

6 BEST: FUTURE BROTHERHOOD

The last few years of the X-Men featured a new element that changed the direction of the team, as the original five X-Men - Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Beast, and Angel - were brought from the future by the present-day Beast in a misguided attempt to show the teen versions of the X-Men the future they should avoid.

This obviously led to a number of problems, including a visit from a future Brotherhood in Battle of the Atom that included Charles Xavier II, Raze Darkholme, Molly Hayes/Bruiser, Deadpool, a monstrous Ice Hulk, and a female Xorn revealed to be a grown-up teen Jean. This Brotherhood was only defeated by the combined power of the present-day and future X-Men teams.

5 WORST: XAVIER'S BROTHERHOOD

Following the attack on New York City by Onslaught, a psionic entity partially created by Xavier, the leader of the X-Men was imprisoned while Operation: Zero Tolerance was set in motion, which unleashed a new wave of Sentinels on the world that began rounding up mutants.

Xavier and a few mutants like Calvin Rankin/Mimic, Blob, Post, and Toad would escape alongside a powerless Xavier. Xavier would train these mutants as a new Brotherhood when they found themselves hunted by a hostile version of Cerebro. This Brotherhood was short-lived and soon taken over by Mystique, who re-organized the team for her own purposes.

4 BEST: XORN'S BROTHERHOOD

When Grant Morrison revamped the team in New X-Men, he introduced a number of new characters like the incredibly powerful and mysterious Xorn, while also opening the doors of the Xavier Institute to a record number of new students.

Xorn would eventually stand revealed as an undercover Magneto (before a confusing retcon) who reformed his brotherhood of Mutants out of a problem class of students he was training as Xorn. This new Brotherhood included Toad along with new recruits like Esme Stepford, Basilisk, Ernst, Martha Johansson, Beak and Angel, though most of the team either died or rebelled.

3 WORST: EXODUS' BROTHERHOOD

The ancient mutant known as Exodus became an Acolyte and follower of Magneto before he struck out on his own and formed his own Brotherhood, which consisted of Avalanche, Black Tom Cassidy, Mammomax, the alternate-reality Exile Nocturne, and Sabretooth, who was working for the team as a hired mercenary.

The team never really had a set mission like other iterations of the Brotherhood, and the lackluster roster which included moles from the X-Men was quickly defeated by a rampaging Juggernaut before getting sucked into the black hole housed within Xorn's head. While the members were seen again, this formation of the Brotherhood thankfully never reformed.

2 BEST: DAKEN'S BROTHERHOOD

Wolverine formed his own black ops team of mutants in the pages of Uncanny X-Force which was tasked with taking out threats to the X-Men before they happen. This led to many brutal confrontations with various X-villains that would return to take their vengeance against the team.

Led by Wolverine's son Daken, this new Brotherhood featured Mystique, Sabretooth, Shadow King, Blob (from the Age of Apocalypse reality) the Skinless Man (From the Weapon Plus program) and the Omega Clan (sibling clones of Omega Red). The team attempted to kill X-Force while turning young Evan into a new Apocalypse, though the majority of the team was killed by X-Force.

1 WORST: BROTHERHOOD GOLD

The last decade of the X-Men wasn't filled with great stories or development of Marvel's mutants, so it makes sense that one of the worst iterations of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants would also show up in the pages of the frequently disappointing X-Men Gold, though thankfully they only appeared a couple of times.

The new Brotherhood was brought together by the telepathic Mesmero and included former New Mutant Magma alongside the Morlock Masque, an unknown lizard-like creature named Kologoth, and new versions of classic Brotherhood members Pyro and Avalanche. This team was revealed to have been put together by anti-mutant activist Lydia Nance to make mutants look dangerous.
