NBC has announced Brooklyn Nine-Nine will return for its eighth and final season this summer.

Speaking to Deadline, Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, confirmed Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8 will debut in the "coveted slot" after the Summer Olympic games in August. "We can think of nothing more deserving than giving [this spot] to the final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine," she said. "This is a beloved show and we wanted to give it a slot where it had access to the biggest possible audience."

“We’re still working out the details but it’s safe to assume some of the episodes will be double run," said Frances Berwick, Chairman, Entertainment Networks, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. She added that NBC would reconsider its release frame for Brooklyn Nine-Nine's final season, should the Tokyo-based Olympics not take place as planned due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Filming on Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 8 began in April, with the main cast reprising their roles as the eccentric detectives of Brooklyn's fictional 99th precinct. The season will only run ten episodes, as co-creator/showrunner Dan Goor joked about when he confirmed the series was ending.

"I'm so thankful to NBC and Universal Television for allowing us to give these characters and our fans the ending they deserve," said Goor. "When Mike Schur and I first pitched the pilot episode to [star] Andy [Samberg], he said, 'I'm in, but I think the only way to tell this story is over exactly 153 episodes,' which was crazy because that was exactly the number Mike and I had envisioned."

Following the global Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, Goor and the Brooklyn Nine-Nine writing staff threw out their first four scripts for Season 8, starting over from scratch. The series' cast also donated $100K to the National Bail Fund helping BLM protestors and have voiced their commitment to portraying the behavior of New York's police in a responsible and considerate manner as they bring the comedy series to a close.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine stars Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher, Terry Crews, Melissa Fumero, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Lo Truglio, Dirk Blocker and Joel McKinnon Miller. Season 8 will premiere on NBC in August, pending any changes to the Summer Olympics' schedule.
