Charles Boyle adores a lot of things on Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He loves being a member of the NYPD. He loves his wife and son. And he definitely loves food. But there is nothing and no one that Charles loves more than fellow detective Jake Peralta. In fact, his obsessive feelings for Jake run so deep that he actually once committed murder to "protect" Jake.

The bond between Jake and Charles has been building for a long time. They worked together in the precinct for years before the series started, developing a relationship that has defined them both. It's a relationship that Jake is definitely in charge of, whether he wants to be or not. Charles has willingly cast himself as the sidekick despite Jake's protests.

This dynamic certainly rubs Jake the wrong way. He doesn't want Charles to fill a subservient role to him, but Charles is the one making it that way. He has all but deified Jake, putting him on a pedestal that no one could ever hope to live up to. It's rare that Charles even acknowledges that Jake has flaws, let alone calling him on them. Even when Jake does something that angers him, Charles forgives him almost immediately.

Jake Peralta's favorite robot

His obsessive behavior manifests in a number of ways, the rest of the crew continuously calls him on it. But one Brooklyn Nine-Nine episode saw things go just a little too far. In Season 4, Episode 17, the entire crew went on a trip to a police convention in Rochester, NY. The gang was super excited because there was always a huge party at the event, and they were all looking forward to blowing off some steam.

Unfortunately, the cops who usually threw that party were busted for corruption. Jake decided that he and the rest of the squad would put the party on. But Captain Holt was in their way. Jake got a hold of a security robot from the trade show floor to keep an eye on Holt and let them know if he was coming. All of this gushing over the robot made Charles incredibly jealous, which dumbfounded everyone around him.

The squad got so drunk that they couldn't remember what happened at the party. As they pieced the evening's events together, they discovered that the robot had been destroyed. The video showed an increasingly inebriated Charles talking more and more trash to the robot. Finally, he hauled it onto a balcony and pushed it over the railing, effectively murdering an innocent robot out of jealousy.

This was an unfortunate and highly expected culmination of his unhealthy obsession with Jake. What's truly scary about this is what would happen if anyone else ever truly challenged him for his status as Jake's best friend. When Jake's old partner showed up in Season 3, Episode 15, Charles went off the rails incredibly quickly. It's hard to say what would have happened had he stuck around. The guy might have ended up on the ground beside the robot.
