James Gunn's new gory thriller Brightburn, about an evil interpretation of a child with Superman's powers, swoops into theaters this week, but its Rotten Tomatoes score makes it look like the film could have a troubled launch.

While over 60%, sitting at 67%, it's not quite the score garnered by other superhero films and thrillers out right now. Its current score puts it on par with Detective Pikachu, but lagging behind John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum and this year's runaway hit Avengers: Endgame.

Though Brightburn has no audience score yet, it's not doing terribly on Rotten Tomatoes. It's not flying over splatter city by any means and, in fact, scores 7% higher than the live-action Aladdin remake, which has a whole lot more hype behind it as a Disney classic.

Still, Brightburn trails both Guardians of the Galaxy films, which stand at 91% and 84%, respectively. Gunn only writes and produces the film, but, nevertheless, he's already set a high bar for the superhero genre.

Critics give it a fair enough shake. The consensus is, "Although Brightburn doesn't fully deliver on the pitch-black promise of its setup, it's still enough to offer a diverting subversion of the superhero genre." At the time of reporting, 513 users want to see the film, according to the site.
