Dust off your wands people! A sequel to Bright is still in the cards.

According to /FilmBright director David Ayer revealed that the sequel was "still in development" during a panel for the Television Critics Association, adding, "We're working on it, so hopefully we'll be able to mount that up soon." This is important news for fans of the first film, as a sequel had already been announced before its release.

Ayer shared the decision more, stating, "I think people felt like there was a lot of doorways to explore. People were like, ‘Tell us about the dragon. Tell us about this, the history.’ So it’s a very rich world and I think we’re going to drill down some more.”

The 2017 Netflix film received mixed-to-negative reviews, with praise being given to the film's performances and makeup artistry, but criticism levied at the film's script and cliched nature. This was two critical failures in a row for both Ayer (whose last film before Bright was 2016's maligned Suicide Squad) and screenwriter Max Landis (whose most recent script was 2015's Victor Frankenstein). The last update we heard of a sequel was in 2018 when it was announced that Evan Spiliotopoulos, writer of Disney's 2017 Beauty and the Beast remake, would take over scripting duties from Landis.

Despite negative reviews, Bright was a commercial success. Netflix announced that 11 million people watched the film in its first weekend. If Ayer's comments prove to be true, we may be returning to fairy-infused Los Angeles sooner than expected.

On Netflix now, Bright stars Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, Edgar Ramirez and Ike Barinholtz.
