With 2019’s “Captain Marvel,” Marvel Studios will expand the scope of their franchise by including their first solo film starring a female hero. Brie Larson, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress at last year’s ceremony, will bring Carol Danvers — a fighter pilot turned NASA security chief turned superhero and Avenger — to life. With the film still a few years away from hitting theaters, little is known about what Marvel Studios’ version of Captain Marvel will look like. In an interview with Yahoo, Larson gave a bit of a hint as to the role Carol Danvers will play in the MCU.
“Well, quite simply, she’s kind of like the bridge between these two worlds,” said Larson. “She’s the bridge between what’s happening up in space and what’s happening down on Earth.”
That’s because Captain Marvel’s comic book origin is quite cosmic, despite the character herself being a human of Earth (Boston, to be exact). While serving as a NASA security chief, Danvers befriended the alien hero Captain Mar-Vell and gained a bit of his powers after a super villain ray hit both Mar-Vell and Danvers at the same time. Danvers’ genes were spliced with Kree DNA, thus giving her powers. Whether or not this origin will be used in the feature film remains unknown.
Larson’s comments are also noteworthy because, as of now, there is no bridge between Marvel’s Earthly and cosmic happenings. The franchise is predominantly set on Earth (with the “Thor” franchise taking jaunts to the Nine Realms of Norse mythology and “Doctor Strange” traveling to different dimensions). The only films set in outer space are the “Guardians of the Galaxy” ones, and so far no one in the “GOTG” films knows that the Avengers or any of their allies exist. That will all change next year in “Avengers: Infinity War” — a film that may also introduce Carol Danvers.
Larson also spoke more about Captain Marvel as a character: “She’s coming to terms with these different parts of herself. There’s a lot of humanity in her, and she is such a strong believer in truth and in peace. I think that’s an incredible symbol to have right now.”
Brie Larson is expected to debut as Captain Marvel in “Avengers: Infinity War,” arriving May 4, 2018, before headlining her own solo film, set for release on March 8, 2019.
