Feig, director of recent comedy hits “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat” and creator of TV cult classic “Freaks and Geeks,” will produce and oversee the film, according to the site. He comes to the film as part of his first-look producing deal with 20th Century Fox, and has expressed his long-time affection for the revered classic comic strip.
“Growing up, ‘Peanuts’ was my Star Wars,” Feig is quoted by Deadline. “Charles Schulz’s characters influenced everything in my career, especially ‘Freaks And Geeks.’ I’m thrilled I finally get to be pals with Charlie Brown and Snoopy.”
The move also has the stamp of approval from Schulz’s son, Craig Schulz, who said in Deadline’s piece, “Knowing how ‘Peanuts,’ especially Charlie Brown’s never-give-up-attitude has influenced [Feig] throughout his life, makes this partnership even more meaningful.”
“Peanuts” will be produced by Blue Sky Studios, whose past successes include the “Ice Age” films, and this year’s “Epic.” The movie will use 3D computer-animation, and was briefly teased earlier this year at CinemaCon.
The film will be directed by Steve Martino (“Ice Age: Continental Drift ,” “Horton Hears a Who!”) and is scheduled for release on Nov. 6, 2015; coinciding with the 65th anniversary of the comic strip’s debut.
