Writer Brian Michael Bendis is Still Developing An X-Men Movie

Around this time last year, it was reported that former X-Men writer Brian Michael Bendis had been enlisted by 20th Century Fox to pen the script for a new film set within the studio's X-Men universe. The film is currently being referred to simply as 143 and is set to be helmed by Deadpool director Tim Miller.

While the impending merger between Fox and Disney has reportedly put Fox's in-development X-Men films in jeopardy and Bendis's current status as one of DC Comics' most prominent  and prolific creators, the writer confirmed that the project is currently still moving forward.

When asked by a fan for an update regarding 143 on Twitter, Bendis replied, "Yeah, I'm working on it right now. It's vvvvvvvery surreal and delightful to be so deep inside the X-Mansion and the Fortress of Solitude at the same time."

Bendis was one of the most prolific Marvel Comics creators of the last several years and was well-known for co-creating characters like Jessica Jones and Miles Morales. After making the jump to DC, he immediately made his presence felt, both as the new writer for Superman and the curator of the up-and-coming Wonder Comics imprint.

In turn, it's likely to surprise some fans that Bendis is still penning the mysterious mutant-themed Marvel film for Fox. While details about the film haven't been released, the film is widely thought to star Kitty Pryde, who was the focus of Chris Claremont and John Byrne's classic Uncanny X-Men #143, where she single-handedly defended the X-Mansion against an alien invader.

Also, Bendis is hardly a stranger to the X-Men. During his aforementioned tenure with Marvel Comics, he wrote for such series as Ultimate X-Men, All-New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men, where he worked extensively with Kitty Pryde.

It's also worth mentioning that Bendis served as an executive producer and a consultant for Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which hit theaters this past December.

At any rate, 143 still appears to be in the very early stages of development, meaning that fans curious to see what Bendis has in store for Marvel's mutants will have to wait for new information to be released by Fox.

The next X-Men movie, Dark Phoenix, is set to be released later this year.

Written and directed by X-franchise veteran Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. The film is scheduled to be released on June 7.
