After Redacted and The Black Dahlia and Femme Fatale and Mission to Mars and Snake Eyes… jeez, really?… Brian De Palma, the man behind some of our most-loved classics in horror/thrillers, is certainly due. Hopefully his just-announced adaptation of last year’s French production Crime D’Amour, retitled Passion, will be what puts the talented filmmaker back on top. The French translates to “crime of love,” but the English title at festival screenings was more lame than that: Love Crime.
The quote from De Palma to Variety on this latest development for him certainly brings a smile to my face: “Not since Dressed to Kill have I had a chance to combine eroticism, suspense, mystery and murder into one spellbinding cinematic experience.” Sweet. It’s flowery PR talk, but another work on par with the Michael Caine-starring classic would certainly be nice.
The original film, directed by Alain Corneau, stars Kristin Scott Thomas and Ludivine Sagnier. I haven’t seen it, but there’s apparently a lot of backstabbery between the two ladies, as well as the usual helpings of sex (not with each other) and violence (possibly with each other). Perfect territory for De Palma to be treading on.
