The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Blair Underwood ("The Event," "Ironside") has been cast as Agent Melinda May's ex-husband on the ABC drama "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." The actor will play Dr. Andrew Garner in an undisclosed number of episodes.

Underwood rose to prominence as a main cast member on the legal drama "L.A. Law," where he starred as Jonathan Rollins for seven seasons. THR reports that filming is currently underway for Underwood's debut, which is scheduled to air in March after the show's 2015 premiere.

The casting of Underwood as her ex-husband indicates that the spy played by Ming-Na Wen could spend some time in the spotlight in the back half of "S.H.I.E.L.D.'s" second season. The show has spent most of it's sophomore outing so far exploring the backgrounds of characters Skye (Chloe Bennett) and Ward (Brett Dalton) while also introducing complex new layers into the relationship between Agents Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). May has made passing mention of having an ex-husband on previous episodes of the series.
