Demon Slayer doesn't hesitate to expose the strengths and weaknesses of all its characters, laying their hearts bare for audiences to explore and analyze.

Courage, however, can be found in everyone, hero and villain alike. It can sometimes be found even in the most unexpected of places. Although recklessness is often considered a sign of bravery, nothing can be further from the truth. In fact, the calmest people usually tend to be the most fearless.

10 Yushiro's Courage, While Impressive, Is Diluted By Brashness

Yushiro frowning and looking to the side in Demon Slayer.

Yushiro is a fiery dynamo in a small package. His emotions often get away from him and spill over into anger, but Tamayo gently guides him out of his outbursts every single time. While Yushiro doesn't value anyone other than Tamayo, it's clear that he is willing to go the extra mile for her.

The young demon's courage, unfortunately, is diluted by his brash habits, so he tends to pick fights with the wrong people (and for inconsequential reasons).

9 Tengen Uzui Always Backs His Words Up With His Actions

Tengen Uzui the Sound Hashira from Demon Slayer looking off.

The Sound Hashira loves the sound of his own name and emphatically demands that Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke "worship" the ground he walks on. However, Tengen's bombastic personality masks his unbreakable determination to fulfill his Hashira duties. Everything else is secondary.

Tengen comes from a long line of shinobi, but he rejects their mission-first philosophy and begins placing a greater value on his life than earlier. Most importantly, the Sound Hashira always backs his words with his actions.

8 Shinobu Kocho Sacrifices Her Life, Paving The Way For Muzan's Inevitable Demise

Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira, in Demon Slayer

Shinobu Kocho is a powerhouse, the Demon Slayer Corps resident Insect Hashira with a bite as sharp as her bark. Her animosity for demonkind is almost palpable, but she treats her human friends (and Nezuko) with great affection.

Kocho's character arc begins on a completely different note than how it ends - she evolves from a naive, reckless combatant to someone who actually has something to lose if she dies. As such, her sacrifice paves the way for Muzan's inevitable death.

7 Giyu Tomioka's Cool Head Often Prevails Over Hotter Ones

Giyu considers sparing Nezuko

Giyu Tomioka is uncharacteristically insecure about his abilities, but his prowess and compassion more than compensate for his (perceived) failings. He charges in to save people without a moment's hesitation, regardless of how the battle might turn out.

At the same time, Giyu possesses the fortitude required to fly against the conventions of the Demon Slayer Corps, as shown when he rescues Nezuko from his fellow Hashira. Giyu's cool head usually prevails over hotter ones.

6 Inosuke Hashibira's Rowdy Enthusiasm Belies His Adamantine Self-Confidence

Inosuke holds up his swords angrily

Inosuke Hashibira's rowdy enthusiasm is simultaneously endearing and irksome, the latter because he runs around screaming about his greatness at anyone within earshot.

He needs to be admired by those stronger than he is and manages to turn his many weaknesses into strengths through willpower alone. Inosuke's boar-based childhood lends itself to countless comical moments in the anime, but it also justifies his adamantine self-confidence.

5 Nezuko Attacks Anyone Who Hurts Tanjiro Without Hesitation

Nezuko using her blood demon art

The brutality native to Nezuko's demon blood is gradually quelled by her brother Tanjiro's unrelenting efforts. Her emotional range has been greatly reduced by her new identity, but Nezuko continues to fight on behalf of the people she loves.

Nezuko attacks her enemies with such daring and ferocity that she almost loses control of her demonic urges. Luckily, she always has Tanjiro to bring her back to humanity whenever she lapses into violence.

4 Tamayo Bravely Defies Muzan For Over A Thousand Years

Tamayo from Demon Slayer.

Tamayo spends the vast majority of her lifespan (already numbering in the centuries) to solve the Muzan problem. Although she fails to kill the Demon King, Tamayo refuses to lose hope, especially after she observes Yoriichi Tsugikuni in action.

This gentle demon bravely defies Muzan's expectations by using her powers to heal rather than harm, despite knowing that she will eventually be killed by him. In fact, Tamayo banks on Muzan's predictability to bring about his doom.

3 Kyojuro Rengoku Doesn't Let Anything Dampen His Spirits Or His Courage

Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira in Demon Slayer

Kyojuro's bubbly nature can come off a little strong to people who don't know him very well. Those who do are completely confident in the Flame Hashira's combat strength and strategic genius.

Kyojuro's father practically abandons him and his brother after their mother's untimely death, forcing the tribulations of adulthood on his young shoulders. Kyojuro accepts the responsibility with a smile, proving that practically nothing can bring his spirits down or dampen his courage.

2 Tanjiro Kamado Will Win The Final Battle Because Of His Tenacity

Tanjiro gives in to his rage and becomes a demon killing machine in Demon Slayer

Tanjiro Kamado's battle spirit is unshakeable, and the prospect of certain death isn't enough to persuade him otherwise. Tanjiro has fought innumerable opponents over the course of the series and will not stop fighting until the world has been rid of demonkind and their spawn.

Tanjiro's convictions impress and inspire everyone around him, including his friends, superiors, and, to a point, even his enemies. He won't win the final battle because of his powers, but because of his tenacity.

1 Zenitsu Agatsuma Needs To Fight His Fears And His Enemies At The Same Time

scared and crying zenitsu - demon slayer

In Game of Thrones, Ned Stark makes it a point to explain to his children that heroism and fear are interlinked concepts, that people cannot be courageous without being afraid. This particular pearl of wisdom helps justify Zenitsu Agatsuma as the bravest character in Demon Slayer.

Zenitsu's abject cowardice might be cringy to watch, but he usually runs towards the source of his terror. It doesn't matter that he whines and wails like a helpless baby because, at the end of the day, Zenitus always does right by his duties.
