Box Office: “Turtles” Stays on Top as “Guardians” Passes $200 Million

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” held off several newcomers — including “Expendables 3” and “Let’s Be Cops” — to land once again at No. 1 and No. 2 at the North American box office this weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the “Turtles” reboot brought in an estimated $28.4 million to remain in the top spot. The film has made an estimated $117.6 million domestically since it debuted last week.

“Guardians,” meanwhile, made an estimated $24.7 million, pushing it over the $200 million mark domestically to $222.3 million. It’s currently the No. 6 film of 2014, trailing “Days of Future Past” by about $10 million.

Globally the film also hit a milestone, as it shot past the $400 million mark to $418.7 million.

This week’s newcomers couldn’t match the might of either film. The comedy “Let’s Be Cops” opened to an estimated $17.7 million, while “The Expendables 3” underperformed with an estimated $16.2 million — well under the first weekend performances of the first “Expendables” ($34.8 million in 2010) and “The Expendables 2” ($28.6 million in 2012). “The Giver” rounded out the top five with an estimated $12.7 million.
