The Halloween weekend box may still be too close to call, but domestic estimates have the debut of “Nightcrawler” edging out “Ouija’s” second week by a mere $9000 dollars.
“Nightcrawler,” the twisted thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal, earned a reported $10,909,000 versus the board game/spirit board spinoff “Ouija’s” $10.9 million. Next week, the two smaller budget films will go up against two potential blockbusters, when Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” and Disney’s “Big Hero 6” open.
The Daniel Radcliffe-starring horror-fantasy “Horns” underwhelmed, earning $104,357 in the 103 theatres it opened in, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But the film, based on a novel by Joe Hill about a small town pariah who grows a pair of horns, was also distributed on VOD earlier this month, where it has earned $1 million.
“Guardians of the Galaxy” topped “Maleficent” this weekend to take the second highest worldwide gross of 2014. “Guardians” currently sits at a global haul $765.1 million, under Michael Bay’s “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” which has earned $1.087 billion. The Bay-produced “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” opened in first place in China this weekend to an impressive $34.7 million, and could pass $500 million worldwide when it opens in Japan next year, according to Box Office Mojo. It’s currently earned $434.5 million worldwide.
