With no new competition in theaters this weekend, "Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1" easily captured first place at the domestic box office, picking up an estimated $21.6 million.

Second place belonged to animated family film "Penguins of Madagascar" which earned $11.1 million, while comedy sequel "Horrible Bosses 2" finished third with an estimated $8.6 million. Disney's "Big Hero 6" and Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" round out the top five, earning with $8.1 and $8 million respectively.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Mockingjay - Part 1" will finish as the second highest domestic performer of 2014 behind "Guardians of the Galaxy." Earning an estimated total of $257.7 million stateside, "Mockingjay - Part 1" is close behind the third and fourth place films of the year, "The LEGO Movie's" $257.7 million and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier's" $259 estimated domestic haul. To date, "Guardians" has earned $332 million stateside.

However, THR also notes that despite the third Hunger Games' film success, it's down 20 percent compared to last year's "Hunger Games: Catching Fire."
