When does a fanbase get weird? Is it when they take their anime body pillow to prom? Is it when they rampage over Szechuan sauce? It's hard to say. For Mario fans, many would argue that things took a weird turn with Bowsette, the anime girl form of Mario's longtime nemesis, Bowser.

Now, granted, this isn't a first time an ostensibly innocuous thing has been sexualized (see: literally all of the internet); however to this day, Bowsette remains popular. Why Bowsette though? Is Bowsette the perfect juxtaposition to the family friendly Super Mario Bros. franchise? Are dragon-turtles just the evolved form of Cat Girls?

To get Bowsette's inside story, we did some extensive research. Some would call this research "excessive," "too in-depth" or "you can't use the University computers to look at that." Regardless, by meticulously studying Bowsette and her Super Crown sisters, we hope to understand why and how dragon turtle ladies suddenly got so hot right now.

Who Is Bowsette?

It all started during Nintendo Direct's preview for New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe on September 13th, 2018. In this preview, Toadette acquires the new Super Crown, transforming herself into Peachette, a Toadette/Princess Peach mashup. The Super Crown raised countless questions: Did Peach used to be a Toad? Did Toadette specifically choose to emulate Peach? Most importantly, does the Super Crown work on... everyone?

The answer came in the form of a comic from Twitter user Haniwa (@ayyk92): At the end of Super Mario Odyssey, Peach turns down both Mario and Bowser. Heartbroken, the former foes comfort one another, only for Bowser to produce a Super Crown. We next see Mario joyfully walking with Bowsette, with Peach looking on in bewilderment. After this comic, Bowsette's popularity skyrocketed, not only displacing Bongo Cat as the significant meme of September but also increasing Nintendo's stock and becoming the top trending topic on Japanese Twitter. But why? Bowsette is popular because she has appeal as massive as her voluptuous spiked shell. After all, Bowsette is a confident, fire-breathing gender bending thicc goth gf gaming reference anime waifu who is both easy to cosplay as and poke fun at – obviously the internet is going to obsess over her.

Different artists began producing their own interpretations of Bowsette, with styles ranging from "redhead" to "NSFW." Due to Bowsette's wardrobe (or lack thereof), Instagram models and cosplayers ditched their Harley Quinn sequinned shorts for Bowsette horns. There are even sub memes about Peach getting "cucked," while Bowser Jr. is upset that everyone is suddenly thirsty for his daddy.

Ironically, Nintendo had already considered mashing up Peach and Bowser in the concept art for Super Mario Odyssey. Originally, Bowser was going to have his own version of Mario's Cappy, allowing him to possess Peach for a final boss fight, taking on Bowser's attributes. Unfortunately, Nintendo broke the Internet's heart by adding in details for the Super Crown on the New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe site, noting "Sorry Luigi – only Toadette can use this item!"

Hold up. Why would Luigi be upset over the Super Crown? Some fans claimed this as evidence that Luigi was actually a transgender woman. We, however, believe that Nintendo's apology to Luigi actually referred to the next bearer of the Super Crown, Booette.

Who Is Booette?

booette

Just as Mario's nemesis became his greatest love, Luigi's apparitional antagonist King Boo would become his actual Boo, Booette. Booette's popularity can be linked to her personality. Just like her in-game counterpart, Booette is absurdly shy whenever she faces Luigi. The second his back is turned, however, Booette turns into a drooling Yandere girl primed to glomp and/or lick her beau.

Pop quiz: who is the Super Mario character most deserving of love? That's right, Waluigi. Waluigi slaps a Super Crown on a Chain Chomp, producing Chain Chompette, a rabid, shark-mouthed gal with a gothic hoop skirt and heavy chain collar. Alternatively, there's Waluigiette, which is exactly what it sounds like.

By this point, the Super Crown started getting passed around the Mushroom Kingdom. Notable Super Crowns concepts include the hoodie wearing Shy Gal, the sleek Bullette Billette, the petite Goombette, the egg-laying Yoshiette and Waluigette, envisioned above by by Nicholas Belanger-Theil.

Eventually, artists began throwing the Super Crown on literally everything. During our research, we found Super Crown versions of Pikachu, Charizard, Ridley, Undertale's Sans, Wario, Kirby, Bongo Cat and even a Super Crown wearing a Super Crown. Once we discovered Danny Devito-ette, we understood the beauty of Bowsette.

You see, Bowsette is not just the curvy goth gf that Mario never knew he wanted. Bowsette is finding beauty in the scaliest of forms. Bowsette is finding love where once there was only hate. Bowsette is about gaining perspective, looking beyond one's past in order to write a new future. Bowsette is a springboard for creativity that expands in all directions, touching everyone from cosplayers and meme-generators to adult art connoisseurs – especially adult art connoisseurs, actually.
