Bourne Legacy 'More Expansive and Bigger,' Jeremy Renner Says

With Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol opening next month, followed in the spring by Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and The Avengers, two-time Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner is now turning his attention to The Bourne Legacy, the spinoff of Universal's lucrative action franchise.

While details have been scarce for the Tony Gilroy-directed film, designed to keep the brand alive in Matt Damon's absence, Renner has revealed a little bit about his character, and Legacy's place within the world of Jason Bourne.

"My character is called Aaron Cross, but he ends up having a bunch of different names," he tells Empire. "For fans of the franchise, [The Bourne Legacy] has that same ticking clock, but it's a new program and new characters."

And despite initial reports, it looks as if the tentacles of the shadowy Treadstone will reach into Legacy. "Yeah, it's that same deal," Renner says, "it's just a new set of agents with a different leash. It's the same tempo and pace but more expansive and bigger. The differences are pretty vast but you'll know it's a Bourne movie."

The Bourne Legacy opens Aug. 3, 2012.
