Henry Cavill Is Superman No More

What's next for Cavill is a huge talking point after the Justice League actor confirmed on Dec. 14 he won't be returning as Superman despite his return appearance in Black Adam. In a detailed Instagram post, Cavill expressed sadness over his abrupt Superman departure while consoling fans and wishing new DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran the best as they rebuild the DC Universe. Gunn, who became DC Studios' co-chairman and co-CEO this past October, confirmed a new Superman movie featuring a younger version of the hero. He announced the film would not feature Cavill, though he didn't confirm a cast or director for the project.

Despite canceling Cavill's long-awaited Superman comeback, Gunn revealed he and the Enola Holmes franchise star have discussed the potential of working together in the future, leaving the door open for a potential DCU return. The news has been met with widespread outrage among fans of Cavill and Superman while some industry players openly expressed disappointment with how the situation was handled. There have been reports of Warner Bros. executives' displeasure with Black Adam lead actor Dwayne Johnson, who hyped Cavill's cameo in the movie and fought hard to bring him back into the DCU. Furthermore, the Man of Steel sequel and Wonder Woman 3 have apparently been scrapped by DC as Gunn and Safran rework the framework of the studio following their takeover.
