WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Boruto: Naruto Next Generations #40 by Masashi Kishimoto, Mikio Ikemoto and Ukyo Kodachi, on sale now.

The major revelations made in the Boruto manga thus far haven't really involved Naruto's family at all. The main one has instead revolved around Kawaki being a vessel for Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, who's currently occupying the body of Kara leader, Jigen.

However, as the deadly Boro guards Naruto in the prison Jigen left the Hokage of Konoha trapped in, we now discover there's a big secret surrounding Boruto's fate, as well. It turns out the young ninja is actually the vessel for Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki to be reborn in.

When Boruto and his revamped Team 7 teleport to the mysterious dimension Naruto's in, they underestimate Boro despite his reputation. The killer ends up whipping them in convincing fashion and they're forced to retreat in order to come up with new tactics. But just before they flee, Boro's in awe of how Boruto is using his Karma mark to boost his powers in battle. When they're in close proximity during combat, he lets it slip: just like Jigen branded Kawaki with Karma so he could occupy his body, so too did Momoshiki to Boruto.

In Boruto: Naruto the Movie, Momoshiki came to Earth with his lackey, Kinshiki, after Kaguya went rogue and stayed on the planet to give rise to the shinobi forces. She eventually died at the hands of Naruto and Sasuke centuries later and Momoshiki arrived, not just to see why she didn't report the planet to their alien overlords, but to also feed off of the God Tree which supplied chakra to Earth. He's been doing this across the cosmos and if Kaguya stayed there, then to him, there must have been a lot of chakra present.

Momoshiki would consume Kinshiki to boost his own powers, namely the Byakugan and Rinnegan, as he feuded with the heroes to make himself godlike. Naruto, Sasuke and Boruto eventually teamed up to kill him, but with Boruto owning a Byakugan as well, he was able to see Momoshiki's spirit as it departed this plane. The ghost left a Karma mark on Boruto, allowing us to see the boy's future and teasing how it was filled with death and destruction. This left fans wondering if Boruto would turn evil someday but as we saw Kawaki turning on Konoha and Naruto in a flash-forward for the series, it appeared that was the trouble Momoshiki foresaw. Now, though, it seems he could have been speaking about him using Boruto's body and turning it into a weapon. Apparently he wanted to possess Boruto and live on, recognizing the boy was even stronger than Naruto or Sasuke, which makes sense as Boruto's mother, Hinata, belonged to the Hyūga Clan who owns the Byakugan.

In other words, with that ocular ability from his mother and the Sage of the Six Paths' bloodline flowing in Naruto, Boruto is indeed the perfect vessel. Momoshiki did have one advantage as the Rinnegan belonged to Sasuke's side of the Sage's descendants, but that's not to say the villain can't retrofit Boruto to wield it. The Nine Tails Demon Fox has alluded to such, warning Naruto in the past the boy could be the most powerful shinobi ever. Even Sasuke sensed it, foreshadowing something sinister lurking.

Ultimately, by combining Naruto's Uzumaki bloodline and the Hyūgas, we actually have someone with a close enough DNA build to the likes of Toneri from the Naruto movie and lower-level Ōtsutsuki members. This means from birth, Boruto was cursed to someday be someone's weapon. Now, with his Karma evolving, it seems Momoshiki (who has been appearing to the kid as an apparition) is merely biding his time before making the big move.

Boruto #41 goes on sale Dec. 20.
