The biggest problem with Boruto is that it has entirely too much filler. Thanks to Boruto being a monthly manga, it can take some time to actually get far enough ahead to briefly cover one of the canon story arcs.

Because of this, the vast majority of the anime isn’t actually canon, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t done some pretty great stories before even in these non-canon arcs. Sometimes the creators feel compelled to do their own arcs that further develop the world of Boruto, like allowing the main character to meet his father from the past or having him train to develop an improved version of his Rasengan. However, that doesn't mean all of the episodes are bad. Here are 10 of the best, ranked according to IMDb.

10 Crossing Time! - 8.8

Urashiki Looking Down On Boruto

The last episode of the Time Slip arc, this is more of an epilogue than anything else. Boruto and Sasuke manage to say their goodbyes to everyone they knew in the past, and Sasuke uses his ability to wipe the minds of anyone who recognized them.

Eventually, they return to the present where they’re able to finally close the case on Urashiki. This episode is powerful because it allows Boruto to bond with his father more after understanding what his father went through.

9 The Power Of The Nine-Tails – 8.8

Urashiki Otsutsuki's glowing Rinnegan in Naruto.

Urashiki’s plan to steal the Nine-Tails in the past is attempted in this episode. Here, he tries to use his line to yank out the Nine-Tails but finds himself unable because Naruto’s chakra is still sealed off.

In combat with Urashiki, he instead awakens the Nine-Tails and causes Boruto to see what Naruto was like before he could completely control himself.

8 Urashiki's Target – 8.8

Urashiki's Target

Konoha has to deal with one of the Otsutsuki members during this episode. It features Urashiki basically embarrassing several Konoha ninja while he makes an attempt to steal the Nine-Tails chakra once again.

Boruto for his part tries to get involved but is forced out of action until Sasuke agrees to work with him for protection. The two of them deduce Urashiki’s intentions and wind up tracking him down, only to get transported to Konoha’s past.

7 Kara's Footprints - 8.9

Kara's Footprints

The opening of the Kara Actuation arc begins with Sai and Sasuke investigating a Kara hideout. It features a focus on one of the followers of the Kara, Garashi Tono, a man who became so devoted to them he was willing to give up his own life to help benefit the organization.

It also focused on what Konoha was learning about the Kara organization, and in general, gives us a look at all of the major older characters.

6 Their Decision – 9

Their Decision

After getting completely stomped by Deepa, Mitsuki winds up having to take both Boruto and Sarada away from the battlefield, just barely managing to get them somewhere safe. This is a more calm episode, pushing the plot forward of the Kara Actuation arc.

It brings in Naruto, Sasuke, Sai, and Shikamaru, as they discuss the mission Konohamaru had, and try to investigate Victor and his company. Our main cast is mostly sidelined, but upon awakening, both Boruto and Sarada begin to seek training to become a better ninja.

5 Jiraiya's Assignment - 9

Jiraiya's Assignment

Another episode in the Time Slip arc, this episode winds up being one where Boruto and Naruto are paired together in training.

Though Boruto is supposed to avoid allowing anyone any information about where he’s from or who he is, he winds up letting it slip that he knows the Rasengan, allowing him and Naruto to practice it together to learn how to work in sync. At the same time, Jiraiya winds up guessing at Sasuke’s secret.

4 A Joint Mission With The Sand – 9.1

The Kara Actuation Arc continues. “A Joint Mission with the Sand” sees Team 10 being given the assignment to work with the Land of Wind.

The group winds up heading to the Land of Wind, where they run into Shinki’s squad after reaching a restaurant where everyone was killed by the Kara member Deepa. Despite having two different teams of ninja take on Deepa, the entire group winds up getting defeated, including genius genin ninja Shinki. This episode ranking so high is a sign of how invested fans have become with this arc.

3 Training Begins! - 9.3

Boruto's Rasengan in Boruto.

“Training Begins” is one of the last episodes of the Kara Actuation arc. After the group received quite the beatdown from Victor and Deepa, both Boruto and Sarada find themselves seeking out people who can help them become stronger.

Boruto begins training under Kakashi in the hopes of learning how to do the Big Ball Rasengan. Kakashi decides to help him upgrade the power of his Vanishing Rasengan, resulting in him learning how to put wind chakra into it. Meanwhile, Sarada begins training under her father to master her Sharingan. Having two of the series’ most popular characters appear in the show is a strong likelihood for the show’s high rating.

2 The Village Hidden in the Leaves – 9.3

Unsurprisingly, episodes from the Time Slip arc rank rather highly. This episode starts with Boruto and Sasuke being sent back into the past, during the time where Naruto was a child and Sasuke had recently deserted the village.

It features the two characters running into many of the original Naruto cast’s main characters, including Jiraiya and Tsunade. It’s worth watching solely for the conversation Naruto has with Boruto about the family at the end.

1 "Death Match" – 9.4

Victor vs Konohamaru

The episode “Death Match” is currently the highest-rated filler episode in the Boruto anime. It’s from the Kara Actuation arc and sees Konohamaru and Team 7 going up against Deepa in an attempt to protect the Hashirama Cell.

Konohamaru alongside Mugino winds up battling against Deepa’s partner Victor, and the entire episode is just visually gorgeous. It doesn’t move the plot forward very much, but it’s got some of the best animation the show’s had in quite some time.
