Not everyone was excited to see the Naruto series continue on through the story of his son, Boruto. When a series continues on with a next generation, it can be difficult to get long-time friends into the story of a young kid that might never live up to the hype of his super OP parent or parents. When it comes to Naruto, we’re talking about one of the largest anime and manga franchises out there -- the manga was serialized in 1999 and has continued on with this day. If you ever wondered where the ninja hype came from, this series probably had a huge helping hand in it.

So when we saw that Boruto was coming to step up to the plate, we were all a little skeptical. Was his series going to be nearly as good as that of his dad? Those are some huge shoes to fill and you’d have to get super creative to get readers into this new story. What could possibly be the goal now after all we went through in the original series? Luckily, it seems like, more often than not, Boruto has taken a lot of influence from his dad -- so it’s kind of like Naruto never left and we get to see him in this new, mature role. And, much to our delight, Boruto came with a lot of skills that were out of this world! There’s a lot of amazing moves Boruto has that his dad would have probably never learned. We’ve found some of the ways Boruto is going to show up his dad, so here are 15 things he can do that Naruto can’t!

15 HIS MOM'S POWERS

It might seem obvious, but as the child of both Naruto and Hinata, Boruto has gotten a couple attributes from his mother’s side. Hintata has always been really cool, considering her heritage and clan, and with Naruto’s capabilities, they were able to give Boruto a really strong lineage.

While he does not possess the Byakugan, he does utilize the Gentle Fist method that the Hyuga Clan, his mother’s people, would often use. It is not nearly as effective as someone from the clan’s would be, but it is still effective and really cool that he’s able to own his heritage.

14 SHURIKENJUTSU

The shurikenjutsu is the ability to manipulate small, hand-held weapons at will. We’ve seen this technique in the series before, but it was always something our main character, Naruto, didn’t really utilize. This is another area that Boruto has excelled in -- he’s able to direct the small weapons he throws, meaning hitting targets is a little more assured.

This technique is often practiced by all shinobi to a certain extent, but again, it wasn’t really something we saw Naruto utilize as frequently. We’re glad to see a lead really take advantage of this technique -- it’s definitely under appreciated compared to most of the others.

13 MOVES LIKE LIGHTNING, LITERALLY

With Naruto, we mostly saw nature techniques revolving around air and sometimes earth. Boruto has brought something a little different by bringing lightning to the table. We’ve seen lightning used before by Sasuke, who’s actually the person to teach Boruto these techniques.

If you’ve ever wondered what kind of ninja Naruto and Sasuke would make combined, you should probably follow the Boruto series because that is essentially what he is. It’s definitely different than what we’re used to with Naruto, but it’s also extremely exciting to watch the way Boruto utilizes this alongside other elements like water and air in battle.

12 SWORD WIELDING

Being able to use a weapon is pretty useful when combat is part of your job -- luckily, that’s another specialty Boruto has that his old man never really did. Naruto barely ever used weaponry, but with Boruto we see him using blades and swords to help him accomplish his missions.

While we’ve always loved Naruto’s mostly bare style of fighting, we’re also digging how his son is using weaponry to up the game. When he’s able to utilize his lightning with the weapon by making it glow with electric energy, you can really see how creative Boruto is with his fighting style.

11 WATER RELEASE

We mentioned, briefly, that Boruto is able to use air, much like his dad, and water. We’ve seen water used by characters like Kakashi, but it’s been really cool to see how Boruto uses this. It’s an element that Naruto never really knew how to control, but one we can definitely see him appreciating in his son.

The most unique part about his water release is Billowing Wave -- a jutsu we hadn’t seen him use before. A lot of people were wondering where he might have learned it from, considering it’s such a powerful attack. In a lot of ways, it definitely shows that Boruto is powerful in his own right, separate from his father.

10 ACCESS TO KAMA

Kama is relatively unknown to the Naruto universe as a whole, and the Boruto series has been going in depth on what it might be and how people get it in the first place. It’s a diamond-shaped seal one the users palm that seems to, for the most part, allow a person to absorb a ninjutsu.

Boruto is one of the users that has this seal -- something Naruto never had. It’s actually pretty exciting because there are very few users in the series so far, meaning it’s an entirely new concept we get to figure out as we follow the series and is something entirely unique to Boruto himself.

9  HIS RIGHT EYE

We know that Boruto got a few things from both his parents, but one huge topic of discussion in the fandom is his right eye. If the picture tells you anything, it’s that this is definitely different! Boruto’s eye is speculated to have come from his mother considering he is technically a descendant from the Hyuga clan.

However, there are a few fan theories that because the eye is so strange and very different from his mother’s, it might actually be something else entirely. Regardless of what this eye means, it’s definitely a really cool attribute and actually one of the few physical attributes that separates Boruto from his father.

8 A LOT MORE GOING ON UPSTAIRS

One of the many charms Naruto had was being a loud, somewhat sassy child with the stubbornness of an ox. He was sort of your typical shounen character that liked to yell and charge head first into battle. This was one of the many reasons that people loved him in the first place, but at times it also made him a little reckless in his battles.

Boruto is very different from his dad when it comes to his battle strategies -- something that he’s actually very good at. We’ve seen Naruto always kind of wing it, but it seems like his son really thinks things through before charging off into a fight.

7 TWO NATURE ELEMENTS

We know that in the Naruto universe, the elements of nature are very important. Often times, ninjas will utilize one or more of the elements to help with their attacks, much like how Naruto uses air or earth. We’ve talked a little bit about how Boruto uses lightning, water and air, but the cool part about his abilities is that we’ve actually seen him use two elements at the same time.

This is not entirely unheard of and, in fact, we’ve seen characters who are able to use it before. What’s amazing about it is that it takes a lot of skill in order to do it and it’s not something Naruto was ever able to do, meaning his son is exceptionally skilled.

6 THE BORUTO STREAM

We know Naruto had some signature moves of his own, so in a way his son is no different. Boruto has his own moves that he himself created, the most popular being the Boruto Stream -- a jutsu that utilizes Wind Release and shadow clones!

Boruto is able to propel either himself or his shadow clones through using a Wind Release that propels them forward at a much faster pace. In fact, Boruto is also able to use this wind tactic with an ally to help them move forward at a faster speed if needed, so it’s extremely useful and creative!

5 CHAKRA CONTROL

We know that Naruto struggled a lot as a kid, but it looks like that didn’t pass on when it comes to his son. One thing Boruto was extremely gifted at was his ability to utilize chakra. It’s noticeable that he has a large amount of it and is able to grasp it very easily.

For example, he was already able to produce shadow clones before he was even properly trained, a feat that almost no one can really do. And where it would take Naruto weeks, if not months, to master a new technique, it seems it only takes Boruto a few days to really get it down.

4 FANCY TECHNOLOGY

The Naruto series always had a really cool mix of fantasy and rural homes with a dash of technological advancement. For example, we’ve seen Naruto wearing headphones and we've even seen a television from time to time. In the recent series, we saw a huge boom in the advancement of technology with the villages now looking a little more like modern, if not futuristic at times.

Technology is important because we also see this incorporated into the new ninja style, something we’ve even see Boruto test out. This isn’t necessarily something Boruto has earned as much as it is a circumstance of when he was born, but it is really cool to see how this new technology has influenced his world in a way Naruto’s wasn’t.

3 THE CHAKRA BLADE

The chakra blade is a really interesting and new concept that the Boruto series has introduced to fans. This long blade is pretty much made of pure chakra and is extremely dangerous. Since Boruto is already skilled with swords in combat, it only makes him that much deadlier with this new blade in his hand.

It’s a bit of a double whammy when it comes to things his father doesn’t do. We’ve seen the chakra blades before, but these were more or less used to absorb a person’s chakra rather than exude chakra itself. Regardless, when this scene was first presented in the manga and later in the anime, fans thought it looked pretty cool.

2 THE VANISHING RASENGAN

We’ve talked a little bit about Boruto creating his own moves, like the Boruto Stream. He’s proven to be a little more creative than his father when it comes to how he uses and creates his technique, so it’s no surprise there’s yet another move that’s totally out there. The Vanishing Rasengan is a technique Boruto creates that utilizes his Lightning Release.

He created a small Rasengan and then adds the Lightning Release so that the attack is virtually invisible to his opponent. It creates a bit of a surprise attack on whoever he’s fighting because they can’t really tell what’s truly going one once it vanishes from sight.

1  PURPLE LIGHTNING

In the Fourth Shinobi War, we saw Kakashi Hatake use a new technique following the loss of his Sharingan. The Lightning Release resulted in a technique called Purple Electricity and this is the move we now see Boruto using. It’s an extremely powerful technique that we know for a fact Naruto has never used.

It’s one of the many ways we see Boruto taking on techniques not only from his father, but the other capable teachers around him. The technique allows the user to fight in close to mid-range combat while utilizing a very powerful lightning. There’s also a variety of uses that make the technique a little more versatile than your standard attack, which also makes it very useful for someone like Boruto.
