WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 229, "Breach of Orders," now streaming on Crunchyroll.

The Naruto franchise saw jutsu after jutsu unleashed in the wars against the Akatsuki, rogue Uchihas such as Obito and Madara, as well as Kaguya's clan. Naruto had the shadow clones and Rasengan, while Sasuke deployed variations of his clan's flame jutsu and the Chidori technique, which have been passed down to their kin. However, the most deceitful was indeed the Shadow Possession from Shikamaru's Nara clan, which few villains could sense as it crept up on them. However, come the Boruto anime, a bloody and most twisted take on this jutsu has been revealed.

Shikamaru used this jutsu often to help Naruto, especially against Pain's army. Hidan is one foe that comes to mind, as Shikamaru needed subterfuge to beat him. This jutsu was hard to catch as it dealt with the Nara clan connecting their shadows to their opponents, allowing them to take possession. And unless the opponent was an elite shinobi, they couldn't break free -- something even Naruto and Sasuke were fearful of.

Boruto anime episode 229, Jujumaru battles Shikadai

In Boruto, though, as Shikadai, Kawaki and Chōchō escorted young Mozuku back to the Land of Calm Seas, they found themselves running into a web of blood that's almost invisible to the eye. This was the Tree Blood Barrier jutsu from an assassin, Jujumaru, who wanted the secret medicine Mozuku was carrying, all so their feudal lord could jack the prices up during a pandemic.

What resulted was pure chaos as Shikadai saw Mozuku being controlled the way his family's technique was meant to do. Jujumaru manifested threads made of his own blood to encase the area around them, laying a trap. And as he made contact and got stained, Mozuku instantly had his body and its actions controlled by the killer. Jujumaru was about to have the boy stab himself, but luckily the heroes knocked the kid out.

Still, as the Konoha-nin tried to cut the threads up, though they were easy to damage, they regenerated in the blink of an eye. It was basically like a shadow around them, but thankfully Shikadai showed he was as smart as his dad.

Jujumaru possesses Chocho in the Boruto anime

He had Chōchō use her rolling ball technique, become a boulder and smash through all the threads, realizing it'd be too much for Jujumaru's chakra and blood to regenerate. However, Chōchō then became possessed and was sent to attack Shikadai, only for him to counter with his Shadow Possession. He took control of his friend, and thanks to her willpower, Chōchō turned and knocked out Jujumaru, allowing Shikadai to breath a sigh of relief.

Jujumaru knew Chōchō would have been a tremendous WMD had she cut loose, but thankfully his response and her loyalty were too much for the assassin to keep playing puppet master. It once more showed how the Shadow Possession can be used so sneakily, as the enemy in Boruto didn't realize Shikadai was playing a chess game all along -- and winning.
