Production has officially begun on the Borderlands film adaptation.Costar Ariana Greenblatt posted the first behind-the-scenes photo from the Borderlands set on Twitter, along with a caption reading, "we out here, cameras rolling [Day 1]." Among those pictured in the image are Greenblatt and the film's director, Eli Roth, who's drawing from a script by Craig Mazin, the creator of HBO's Chernobyl limited series.RELATED: Borderlands Film Casts Hillbilly Elegy Star in Original Role

Based on the Gearbox Software, Telltale Games and 2K Games franchise, the Borderlands movie was announced in 2015 but didn't really start moving forward until Roth signed on to direct in Feb. 2020. Like the original role-playing first-person shooters, the film is expected to take place on the planet Pandora, a world left ravaged and lawless after powerful corporations plunder it in search of mineral riches. However, when the planet's legendary Eridian Vaults -- which contain the treasures and wealth of the extinct Eridian alien race but are guarded by dangerous monsters -- are uncovered, those corporate forces return, in the hopes of claiming their long-sought prize.

Kevin Hart will star in the Borderlands movie as Roland, a former member of the the Atlas Corporation's private military force, the Crimson Lance, and veteran fighter. Other key cast members include Cate Blanchett as Lilith, a thief and one of the six women in the galaxy who belongs to the super-powered "siren" class. Jamie Lee Curtis also costars as Dr. Patricia Tannis, an archaeologist based on Pandora who has a complicated relationship with Lilith. As for Greenblatt, she will play Tiny Tina, a young explosives expert who first appeared in 2011's Borderlands 2.

The Borderlands video game franchise currently consists of four games, along with the 2014 spinoff Tales from the Borderlands. Collectively, its games have sold millions of copies and grossed over $1 billion, making it one of the all-time biggest-selling video game properties. Although Lionsgate has yet to announce any plans for additional sequels or spinoffs, it's presumed the studio is hoping to launch a new franchise with the Borderlands film, much like Sony aims to do with its upcoming Uncharted movie starring Tom Holland.

Directed by Eli Roth, Borderlands stars Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Florian Munteanu, Arianna Greenblatt and Haley Bennett. The film has yet to receive a release date.
