Jack Black has joined the cast of Lionsgate's Borderlands adaptation as the team's robot companion Claptrap.

"I am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth," director Eli Roth said. "Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen."

Voiced by David Eddings and Jim Foronda in the video games, Claptrap is a small yellow robot with a big personality, whom many consider the franchise's unofficial mascot. The character was an NPC in Borderlands 1-3 but players got a chance to control him in The Pre-Sequel.

"We couldn’t have been more in sync with our filmmakers and casting executives as we approached this role," Lionsgate Motion Picture Group President Nathan Kahane said. "Everyone who’s ever played the game knows Jack is perfect for this part. We’re thrilled he will add his endless comic energy and voice to our film — he’ll bring so much to the movie."

The Borderlands film is expected to be a loose adaptation of the Gearbox Software, Telltale Games and 2K Games franchise, which constitutes a set of role-playing first-person shooters set on the planet Pandora. After being ravaged and abandoned by larger corporations in search of treasure, the left-behind workforce take over the planet and turn it into a lawless land. However, following the discovery of mystical Vaults, the corporations return to the planet to plunder its wealth.

Directed by Eli Roth, Borderlands stars Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jack Black. The film has yet to receive a release date.
