Lionsgate has been developing a Borderlands film adaptation since 2015 and yet there has been very little in the way of news, until now.

Actor and director Eli Roth is now heading the adaptation, with Avi Arad and Ari Arad attached as producers through Arad Productions. The film also has Randy Pitchford and Strauss Zelnick attached as executive producers-- Gearbox Software founder and Take-Two Interactive CEO, respectively, the minds behind the popular first-person shooter games.

Roth expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "I'm so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team, and studio." He went on to describe what he would bring to the world that gamers know, saying, "I look forward to bringing my own energy, ideas, and vision to the wild, fun, and endlessly creative world of the game." The screenplay is being written by award-winning screenwriter Craig Mazin.

Borderlands is set in the future, in which "Vault Hunters" have arrived on the planet of Pandora in search of an alien vault containing advanced technology. Since its release, the video game has sold approximately 57 million copies worldwide. Production for the upcoming adaptation is expected to begin later this year.
