BOOM! Studios, 20th Century Fox Sign First-Look Deal

20th Century Fox has signed a multifaceted first-look deal with BOOM! Studios, as first revealed by The Hollywood Reporter.

The agreement gives Fox and its divisions access to the libraries of both BOOM! and its imprint Archaia Entertainment, which it acquired earlier this year. In turn, BOOM! will have access to Fox’s back catalog of properties to select projects for comic book reboots — which can then be used by Fox to produce remakes. BOOM! founder and CEO Ross Richie and Archaia editor-in-chief Stephen Christy will serve as producers on the adaptations.

In an aspect THR calls “unprecedented,” BOOM! will get first-dollar gross — a percentage share of all gross from a film — on adaptations of their work, with that money split 50-50 between the publisher and the respective comic book’s original creators.

“In an era where Jack Kirby doesn’t get paid for ‘The Avengers,’ we are bringing the Jack Kirbys into the circle,” Richie told THR. “They can use our expertise in the field while they focus on being creative.”

The deal is said to have been put in motion when Fox executive vice president of production Mark Roybal visited BOOM! and Archaia’s joint booth at July’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, and was impressed with the variety of their output. A deal would have been unlikely, the article said, before BOOM Studios’ acquisition of Archaia this past June.

“2 Guns,” based on a 2007 BOOM! miniseries by writer Steven Grant and artist Mateus Santolouco, debuted in theaters in early August, and has made $96.9 million worldwide off of a reported $61 million production budget. Archaia series “Rust” is currently in development at Fox, to be directed by “Rio’s” Carlos Saldanha.
