WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett "Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land," streaming now on Disney+.

As expected, the premiere of The Book of Boba Fett is rich with details about the Star Wars universe, particularly Tatooine, where the opening episode takes place. Much of it is “locals only” content, detailing things such as the daily lives of Tusken Raiders and the various power players in nearby Mos Espa. But it also includes a much older Easter egg, going back not only to the Clone Wars but also to the earliest incarnations of Boba Fett himself.

Season 1, Episode 1, “Stranger in a Strange Land” opens with the bounty hunter receiving tribute from the former underlings of Jabba the Hutt, acknowledging him as the new “daimyo” following his murder of Jabba’s successor Bib Fortuna. Among their ranks is a Trandoshan named Dokk Strassi, the head of her family and vaguely menacing protector of Mos Espa’s city center. And the Easter egg lies in the gift he brings: a pelt that looks suspiciously like a Wookiee’s.

Trandoshans are a reptilian race with a fierce warrior culture and a penchant for hunting. The first to appear in the saga was Bossk, who stood among the bounty hunters tasked by Darth Vader with finding the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. Boba Fett beat him to the punch, but the species subsequently saw a great deal of development that shed light on Bossk’s presence there. Not only were the Trandoshans expert hunters, but they also particularly relished killing Wookiees.

That came to the forefront most notably in Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 3, Episode 22, “Wookiee Hunt.” Ahsoka Tano and a group of younglings are joined by Chewbacca as they are collectively stalked by a Trandoshan hunting party. The episode emphasizes how important such hunts were to the species, as well as why the deadly Wookiees were such prized targets. “Tooth and Claw,” a short story from the canonical 2020 anthology From a Certain Point of View, covers Bossk’s specific enmity for Chewbacca and Han Solo, who foiled the bounty hunter’s schemes numerous times over the course of their career.

That lends the gift to Fett in “Stranger” a particular significance. Not only is it a genuine -- if gruesome -- sign of respect from the Trandoshan, but it’s also an acknowledgment that Fett could achieve what one of their own couldn’t when he captured Chewbacca and Solo. It’s also a subtle reminder of how dangerous Dokk and her family are: powerful enough to take down one of the galaxy's most powerful species and present his skin as a throwaway.

But it goes deeper than that. Early incarnations of Fett held that the braids on his right shoulder were Wookiee scalps. They were present in his first appearance -- 1978’s infamous Star Wars Holiday Special -- which was particularly unsettling considering that his appearance included actively teaming up with Chewbacca. The origin of the braids was always a part of Legends content, but they were confirmed as canon with Marvel’s comic book War of the Bounty Hunters. That makes the Trandoshan’s gesture a particularly meaningful one, as well as firmly connecting The Book of Boba Fett to earlier entries in the franchise.

It may be important as Fett works to cement his power and various rivals test his ability to hold on to Jabba’s empire. The episode suggested that it’s difficult to know where they stand -- "Even when a Trandoshan pays you a compliment, it sounds like a threat,” Fett tells Shand. But the gift says something very different. With other figures taking a run at him and his need for allies increasing, that horrific present might be a signal that Boba has at least one ally.

To see Boba receive this strange gift, Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett Episode 1 is streaming now on Disney+.
