The Book of Boba Fett provides a further look into the more grounded aspects of Star Wars that started with The Mandalorian. Featuring the iconic Boba Fett and his partner Fennec Shand, they try to navigate Tatooine’s criminal underworld as they take control of Jabba the Hutt’s former empire.

However, the show didn’t reflect the quality shown in the first two seasons of The Mandalorian, and fans with high expectations were let down. The show struggles to find its footing in several respects during its first season, and viewers were left disappointed by the direction the show chose to go.

10 The Tusken Raiders Were Killed Off

Boba and the Tuskens

The introduction of the Tusken Raiders as more than just enemies has been a highlight of the Star Wars television era. Boba Fett is initially captured by the Tuskens after he escapes the Sarlacc pit, and he befriends them quickly. He is integrated into their culture and the Tuskens become likable characters, but they are killed offscreen while Boba is away. The Tuskens could have helped Boba achieve power in Tatooine, and in turn, he could have helped them reclaim stolen land, and fans were disappointed by the missed opportunities with their deaths.

9 Boba Fett’s Lack Of Clear Motive

Once the Tusken Raiders are gone, Boba turns to the cities of Tatooine and wants to take over the crime world. This goal could be the result of the Tuskens’ murder at the hands of bandits, but this remains unclear in the story. It is hard to get a grasp of Boba’s character with little development as to why he chose to reenter the criminal world since that was how he ended up getting injured by the Sarlacc. Viewers coming from The Mandalorian hoping for expansion on his goals will be disappointed.

8 The Quick Transition To Post-Mandalorian Season Two

Fennec Shand and Boba Fett sit on the throne in Jabbas Palace in Star Wars The Mandalorian

The first four episodes of the show built up to the point where Boba and Fennec appeared in Season 2 of The Mandalorian. When that point was reached, there is a series of quick flashbacks depicting their actions in the other show, including the murder of Bib Fortuna.

Those hoping to see a more in-depth explanation of their goals and the build-up to their takeover of Jabba’s palace were disappointed. Though the show has bounced back and forth between the present and flashbacks, after this point it remains in the present.

7 The Relationship Between Fennec And Boba

When Boba and Fennec were shown working together in Season 2 of The Mandalorian, it was established that they were comfortable with each other. Fans awaiting The Book of Boba Fett hoped to see a meaningful start to their relationship, but the show didn’t quite deliver. After being rescued by him, Fennec decides to stay with Boba mostly for what she perceives to be a tactical advantage. Their relationship lacks the depth fans were hoping for at the start, though they certainly work well together.

6 The Hutt Family Was No Threat

Book of Boba Fett Hutt twins

In the movies and The Clone Wars, the Hutt family was shown to be a powerful syndicate with many areas of control. With the introduction of the unnamed “Twins” in The Book of Boba Fett, there was potential for a display of some of that old power as they tried to have Fett assassinated by Krrsantan. However, they ultimately decide not to start a war with the Pykes over the territory, even though the two clans have been adversaries, and the Hutt family withdraws from Tatooine to the disappointment of fans.

5 Flashbacks That Went Nowhere

The Book of Boba Fett Boba on Kamino

The first couple of episodes showed some flashbacks of Boba’s time on Kamino, watching Jango depart without him. In The Clone Wars, Boba did not speak much about Kamino, so seeing references to his homeworld is exciting.

However, these flashbacks are never given much context besides being part of a dream sequence. It would have been interesting to see a more seasoned Boba look back over the turmoil in his life and perhaps get a better look at what drove him to bring peace to Tatooine, but ultimately the flashbacks led nowhere.

4 Only The Pykes Were Involved

Pyke Syndicate in The Book of Boba Fett Episode 3

The Pykes are the syndicate that gets featured the most when it comes to Star Wars media. However, there are other syndicates that have not gotten as much attention. Other groups like the Black Sun and the Crimson Dawn could have gotten involved in trying to take over the power vacuum on Tatooine, as their current positions have been left obscure after The Clone Wars and their involvement with Darth Maul. But, only the Pykes were featured in The Book of Boba Fett, though there was potential for a more complex syndicate war.

3 The Mods Were Out Of Place

Sophie Hunter as Drash in The Book of Boba Fett

The Book of Boba Fett introduced a new group called the Mods, a street gang comprised of people that have been modified with droid parts. While the idea is interesting in concept, the Mods and their equipment didn’t quite fit with the dusty, run-down aesthetic of Tatooine. The colors of their clothing and their bikes, and their overall appearance with their shiny droid parts don’t fit with the area. If the idea had been executed better, introducing them on a different planet with an environment more suitable for a street gang, they could have been more impressive.

2 Cad Bane’s Death

Cad Bane Live Action in Boba Fett

Cad Bane’s live-action introduction took fans by surprise. His fate across the years of the Empire and afterward was left uncertain, and to see him alive was a welcome turn of events, with a design that does its best to stay true to his animated appearance.

Unfortunately, in the finale, he and Boba face off, and the fight seems to end with Bane’s death, though not without the bounty hunter showing off his gun skills one last time. Though Bane was bound to die sometime, it is still disappointing to see him go shortly after his live-action debut.

1 The Mandalorian Took Over The Show

The Book of Boba Fett Mandalorian With Darksaber

Fans were hoping to see Din Djarin, at least in a cameo role, and the show delivered more than expected. He had a prominent role in the last three episodes of the show, so much so that he and Grogu overshadowed the intended main characters. It was nice to see Din, Grogu, and some other characters from The Mandalorian, but the amount of time they were given in a show not about them left fans wishing that their stories had been left for season three.
