WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Mandalorian, "Chapter 16: The Rescue," streaming now on Disney+.

The fan-favorite bounty hunter Boba Fett made his long-awaited return in The Mandalorian Season 2, having miraculously survived his fall into the Sarlacc Pit in Return of the Jedi. Over the course of the season, Boba recovered his iconic Mandalorian armor from Din Djarin and later joined the Mando in a mission to rescue Grogu from Moff Gideon and his Imperial forces.

Season 2 ultimately ended with a teaser for a project titled The Book of Boba Fett, which Lucasfilm has now officially announced will be a spinoff series of The Mandalorian. With that in mind, here's everything we know about The Book of Boba Fett so far.

The Mandalorian Season 2 post-credits scene

The Mandalorian Season 2 finale, "Chapter 16: The Rescue," includes a post-credits scene that shows Boba Fett and Fennec Shand breaking into Jabba the Hutt's palace on Tatooine. There, the pair find Jabba's former majordomo Bib Fortuna sitting comfortably on his old boss' throne, having assumed control of his criminal empire since Jabba was killed in Return of the Jedi five years earlier. Unfortunately for Bib, his attempt to sweet-talk Boba doesn't work and the latter kills him with a blaster shot before taking his spot on Jabba's throne. The scene then cuts to a title card revealing The Book of Boba Fett will stream on Disney+ in December 2021.

Robert Rodriguez with Grogu on The Mandalorian set

Lucasfilm has confirmed The Book of Boba Fett will be executive produced by Spy Kids and Machete filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, along with The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni. Rodriguez previously directed The Mandalorian Season 2 episode "Chapter 14: The Tragedy," in which Boba and Fennec track Din and Grogu to the planet Tython in order to take back Boba's armor. The episode was widely praised for its action scenes, particularly Boba's hand-to-hand fights with Gideon's stormtroopers.

Temuera Morrison is set to reprise his role as Boba from The Mandalorian in The Book of Boba Fett, along with Ming-Na Wen as Fennec. Morrison first joined the Star Wars franchise playing Boba's father, Jango Fett, in Attack of the Clones and later re-recorded Boba's voice for the 2004 re-release of The Empire Strikes Back. Meanwhile, Wen made her debut as Fennec in The Mandalorian Season 1, where her character was shot and left for dead on Tatooine, before being saved by Boba. Wen will also voice Fennec in the upcoming animated Clone Wars sequel series, Star Wars: The Bad Batch.

How The Book of Boba Fett Affects The Mandalorian Season 3

Din Djarin and Boba Fett in The Mandalorian Season 2

Favreau has announced The Book of Boba Fett is now in production and will premiere on Disney+ before The Mandalorian Season 3 does. Curiously, however, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously said The Mandalorian Season 3 is also targeting a December 2021 release date, meaning the latter will be arriving a little later than originally expected. In fact, depending on how long The Book of Boba Fett Season 1 runs, The Mandalorian may not return with new episodes until the first quarter of 2022.

Furthermore, although Favreau and Filoni are both executive producers on The Book of Boba Fett, they may not be as heavily involved creatively as they are on The Mandalorian. At Disney's Investor Day 2020, Lucasfilm revealed Favreau and Filoni are also working on The Mandalorian spinoffs titled Ahsoka and Rangers of the New Republic, which will interconnect with the show and culminate in a "climactic story event." Since it doesn't sound like The Book of Boba Fett will tie directly into that overarching story, it may be a relatively standalone project that's spearheaded more by Rodriguez than Favreau and Filoni.

The Book of Boba Fett arrives on Disney+ Dec. 2021.
