February 2020 is shaping up to be one of the busiest for cinemas in recent memory, topped off by the announcement today that Bond 25 has been pushed back to Feb. 14 of that year, placing Cary Fukunaga's sequel in direct box-office competition with unannounced live-action releases from Disney and DC, as well as an animated adaption of Nimona and a horror release by Blumhouse.

While it's likely that at least one of those films, including potentially Bond, will shuffle dates to avoid splitting audiences -- 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice moved up its premiere to distance itself from Captain America: Civil War -- it does make that February an unusually stacked one for a non-summer month. But which Disney and DC Extended Universe features will 007 face?

Historically, Disney release dates are identified separately from those of Marvel Studios, making the possibility of a Marvel Cinematic Universe film occupying the February slot unlikely. With the House of Mouse finding continued commercial success in the February/March window, that date will likely be something else entirely.

While the unannounced film is a live-action production, though it's unlikely to be an adaptation of a classic animated film like last year's Beauty and the Beast, which earned over $1 billion globally after its March opening. Live-action adaptations of Aladdin and Mulan, both of which are currently in production, already have release dates confirmed for May 2019 and March 2020, respectively, while remakes of Lady and the Tramp and The Sword in the Stone are set to premiere on the Disney Play streaming service. With a Disney live-action adaptation already scheduled for the following month, the February release will likely be an entirely different, still unannounced live-action movie.

The DCEU production calendar has notoriously been shuffled extensively over the years but the films it has rumored to begin principal photography early next year offer clues on which film may take the February slot for Warner Bros. After being fast-tracked into production over the summer, the Birds of Prey film is expected to begin filming this January for a 2020 release with director Cathy Yen helming the project. Another strong possibility is the long-delayed Flash solo film starring Justice League's Ezra Miller. After signing Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley to direct the movie this past March, Miller has indicated the studio is eying a February 2019 start date for principal photography.

A third, and less likely possibility, for the February 2020 DCEU release is Matt Reeves' long-awaited Batman solo film. Reeves reportedly turned in his first draft of the superhero script to Warner Bros. earlier this month with rumors surfacing that the production is planning to begin filming this spring. However, additional reports have suggested that the DCEU's Batman film will not begin principal photography until Birds of Prey and The Flash have both concluded filming making a summer start date more likely for the project. This would put the Reeves' production more on schedule for a late summer or fall 2020 release than February. As such, Birds of Prey is perhaps the strongest possibility for a February 2020 debut.

After the February successes of films like this year's Black Panther and 2015's Kingsman: The Secret Service, studios are looking more and more to release their tentpole blockbusters outside of the traditional summer months. With Bond 25's updated release date for Valentine's Day 2020, the film occupies an already crowded February for major studios looking to get an early box office boost for the year. Either way, audiences will not be at a loss of films to choose bring their dates to in February 2020.

Directed by Cary Fukunaga, Bond 25 stars Daniel Craig. It's scheduled for release on Feb. 14, 2020.
