Serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from November 2012 to June 2019, Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma is a comedy cooking series that follows Soma Yukihira, who aspires to be a full-time chef. His father enrolls him in Tōtsuki Culinary Academy, an elite culinary school that pits him against other students in cooking competitions called shokugeki. Thanks to celebrity chef Yuki Morisaki who came on as a food constant, readers can recreate the recipes in the comfort of their own homes. According to an Anime News Network interview with Yūto Tsukuda, the writer of Food Wars!, Saeki came up with the idea of "a girl eating food, and she expresses herself about the food with 'ecstasy.'" The sleeper hit captured viewers' hearts with its premise about a lonely and shy girl struggling to make friends. After watching a rock band on TV, Hitori Gotō decides to pursue music, hoping that this endeavor would lend herself to making more friends. She posts guitar covers of popular songs under the alias "guitarhero" and gathers a small gathering of fans, including Nijika Ijichi and Ryō Yamada, members of Kessoku Band. The three later recruit Ikuyo Kita to be the vocalist and guitarist of the group. While the premise is simple, the passion coming from director Keiichirō Saitō in adapting Aki Hamaji's work is evident in its execution, thus garnering praise for its stellar music and relatability.
