Even in the face of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Bob's Burgers movie is still set for a theatrical release.

"We talked about [streaming] as it pertains to the movie and we decided we really want the movie to come out in theaters because Bob's is already on TV," Bob's Burgers creator Loren Bouchard explained to Entertainment Weekly. "Of course, we want everyone to be able to safely see it in movie theaters. We don't want anyone to put themselves at risk. But assuming there's a point at which everyone can go back to theaters safely, we're excited about Bob's the movie being seen in the theater, in the dark with other people, because that's something we’ve never been able to do before. That's the main course that we're delivering to people, in this case."

Bouchard also noted that COVID-19 upended "the most ambitious year ever", with the health crisis impacting not only the Bob's Burgers movie, but also TV shows like Central Park and the upcoming The Great North. "I feel like the timing is really hilarious," Bouchard remarked. "We were just slammed."

Few details have been released about the Bob's Burgers movie aside from its current April 9, 2021 premiere date. Bouchard will serve as writer/director, and the original cast will reprise their roles from the animated series. Not much else has been revealed about the plot or where it falls in the TV show timeline. Bouchard previously said in 2017, "We know the movie has to scratch every itch the fans of the show have ever had, but it also has to work for all the good people who've never seen the show."

Bob's Burgers premiered on Fox since 2011 and is currently in its eleventh season. It airs Sunday nights at 8:30 p.m. ET on Fox.
