Blumhouse's newest installment in The Purge horror movie franchise, The Forever Purge, will be released earlier than expected.
According to Deadline, The Forever Purge will be the lone release for Universal on July 4 weekend, hitting theaters on Friday July 2. This follows the release of Fast & Furious 9 and comes ahead of the release of Marvel's Black Widow.
The news of The Forever Purge's new release date comes after reports that Top Gun: Maverick, which was originally scheduled for a July 2 release, was delayed until Nov. 19.
Franchise creator James DeMonaco revealed in 2018 following the release of The First Purge that the next film in the franchise would likely be the last. "I think I’m going to write it. I think it's a great way to end it all. We want to end it all, I think, in this one, and I'm very excited," DeMonaco said. "When I came up with the idea and pitched it to everybody, they seemed psyched, and I think it will be a really cool ending, how we take this one home."
The First Purge, which came out in 2018, was the most recent film in the Blumhouse franchise and despite it receiving subpar reviews -- and holding a score of 56% on Rotten Tomatoes -- it was the highest-grossing film of the Purge series, earning $136.2 million worldwide.
The Forever Purge is directed by Everardo Gout.
